Dunn grabs Lopez by the shirt as he tries to leave with the $16 hatchet he was suspected of stealing. Seconds later, Dunn fires two shots, killing Lopez.<\/p>\n<p>An Attorney for the Lopez family told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wftv.com\/news\/local\/lakeland-commissioner-charged-in-shoplifting-suspect-s-fatal-shooting\/856194467\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-official-shoplifter-charge-2nd-degree-murder\" title=\"Florida Official Who Shot Shoplifter Charged with 2nd Degree Murder\">Channel 9<\/a>\u00a0that they were \u201cpleased\u201d with the grand jury\u2019s decision to indict Mr. Dunn.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/watch-florida-city-official-fatally-shoots-alleged-shoplifter\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-official-shoplifter-charge-2nd-degree-murder\" title=\"Florida Official Who Shot Shoplifter Charged with 2nd Degree Murder\">Watch: Florida City Official Fatally Shoots Alleged Shoplifter<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;There is no way to undo the life-shattering harm that Mr. Dunn caused, but we are pleased with the grand jury\u2019s decision for such an unnecessary and egregious use of deadly force,\u201d said the attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to thank the State Attorney\u2019s Office and the Lakeland Police Department for their swift and thorough investigation. We are hopeful that through both this criminal proceeding and the civil suit we plan to file, Mr. Dunn will be held fully accountable for the senseless killing of Christobal Lopez,\u201d continued the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an attorney for Dunn said that the video footage doesn\u2019t tell the whole story and that his client was acting in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will offer evidence in this case that (Dunn) was confronted by an armed shoplifter with an ax,\u201d Rusty Franklin told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theledger.com\/news\/20181020\/judge-orders-lakeland-city-commissioner-michael-dunn-held-without-bond-on-2nd-degree-murder-charges-in-shooting-death-of-christobal-lopez?rssfeed=true\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"florida-official-shoplifter-charge-2nd-degree-murder\" title=\"Florida Official Who Shot Shoplifter Charged with 2nd Degree Murder\">the Ledger.<\/a> \u201cIt was in his hand. A video only shows 10 seconds of what happened. There were other witnesses in the store. I don\u2019t know what they said to the grand jury or to the police, but I have conducted interviews of them and they believe that Michael was acting in self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If convicted of second-degree murder Dunn could spend the rest of his life in prison.
