They are one of the few companies that are successful at making both absolute top military-grade scopes and economy-line scopes. While I like a $5000 dollar piece of glass as much as the next guy, it isn’t always what is in the budget. So when this review was originally written, we took a look at a new offering in the VX line, at a much more palatable MSRP of $259.00.

That number needs some 2026 context. The $259.00 figure above is the original price from the review and stays here because that was part of the test. Today, Leupold lists the VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Hunt-Plex at $399.99. That is a noticeable jump, but the mission of the scope has not really changed. This remains the gateway into Leupold’s VX hunting line, built for the shooter who wants recognizable Gold Ring durability without stacking premium features on top of the rifle.

Leupold AR mount

The VX series scopes have been around for several years, in one variation or another. I have a couple on my 10/22, and even used the Firedot illuminated version for a while to shoot competitive 3 Gun. For the price, I have always found them to be excellent in quality and feature packed.

Clean reticle and clear glass

When this review first ran, the VX-Freedom was the newest value play in Leupold’s VX family. From the mouth of company spokesman Tim Lesser, “The VX-Freedom line was designed to deliver the versatility and performance that hunters and shooters expect from the Leupold brand, at a tremendous value.”

And he does have a point. Leupold is clearly capable of making excellent lenses and tough, durable scopes. Even at the lower price end, that capability translates. The same can’t be said of a cheap company slapping together whatever parts are around. You shouldn’t expect the VX Freedom to perform like an MK8, but you shouldn’t expect it to perform like a Norinco either.

Why the VX-Freedom Still Makes Sense in 2026

The current VX-Freedom lineup is built around Leupold’s Advanced Optical System and a 3:1 zoom ratio. In normal human language, that means this is still the uncomplicated branch of the family tree. You get useful magnification ranges, straightforward controls, a lightweight build, and the same basic waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof expectations that made the original scope appealing.

What you generally do not get is the more sophisticated optical package and dialing hardware that define the VX-3HD and VX-5HD tiers. That is not necessarily a weakness. A hunter who wants to zero a rifle, confirm it before season, and then spend more time looking for animals than playing with turrets may be perfectly happy here.

40 mm Obj

At the time of the original review, the Freedom line had 16 different power and reticle options to cover a wide base of users. For a test model, we selected a 3-9 power with a 40 mm objective lens. The reticle in ours is a simple duplex, though the VX series offered mil dots and ballistic reticles as options.

Leupold Gold Ring Assurance

A simple duplex is not normally my cup of tea, but many hunters prefer this option, hence our decision to test it. Mils offer greater holdover accuracy, but there is something to be said for the duplex. It is clean, simple, and easy to use.

Smooth controls

The duplex is a good balance of size, being fine enough to zero on a 1-inch target, but not so fine you lose it in thin trees. The scope is a second focal plane setup, but that doesn’t matter with just a duplex the way it does with mils. The glass was very clear for the price and well capable of reaching out.

Opening the box, I was amazed by how light the scope is. I expected it to be relatively light, but it almost feels like a toy. Tipping the scales at 12.2 ounces, you can see why. For a hunting rifle, that is a win. Eight years later, 12.2 ounces is still light enough to make plenty of modern scopes look like they packed a lunch.

The windage and elevation turrets are thin, which keeps them from grabbing vegetation. The adjustments are in 1/4 MOA for both, a fine level of adjustment detail uncommon for this price when the review was originally conducted. In a short tracking test, the VX Freedom tracked true for elevation and windage.

1/4 MOA elevation adjustment

The tube is 1 inch, and Leupold makes plenty of mounting options for it. I see this scope as a match for beginners on the AR, so that is the mount I ordered. With a cantilever one-piece base, the optic fit well on my SAINT EDGE. Eye relief was no issue, and the scope worked well in that application.

1/4 MOA windage adjustment

VX-3HD: The Upgrade for Hunters Who Stay Until Last Light

This is where the buying decision gets interesting. The VX-3HD is not simply a VX-Freedom with a fancier badge. It moves into Leupold’s Elite Optical System and, on current models such as the 3.5-10×40 CDS-ZL Duplex, adds the Custom Dial System with ZeroLock elevation.

The practical case for paying more is low-light performance, dialing capability, and refinement without abandoning the lightweight hunting-scope formula. The current 3.5-10×40 CDS-ZL Duplex still uses a 1-inch main tube and weighs 13.5 ounces. So you are not turning your mountain rifle into a crew-served weapon just because you wanted better glass.

GunsAmerica’s separate VX-3HD 3.5-10×40 review found noticeably improved resolution, clarity, and contrast in low light compared with its VX-3i predecessor. That review also singled out the scope’s weight and CDS-ZL system as major strengths. In other words, this tier makes the most sense for somebody who hunts hard enough to notice the difference between “I can see antlers” and “I can clearly see what I am shooting at” when the light gets ugly.

Current pricing reflects the jump. Leupold lists the VX-3HD 3.5-10×40 CDS-ZL Duplex at $599.99. That puts it roughly $200 above the current VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Hunt-Plex. Whether that $200 is painful or cheap depends mostly on where and how you hunt.

If most of your deer appear at 75 yards in decent light, the Freedom may do everything you need. If you spend the season on a mountain, in dark timber, or watching a field until the legal clock is about to beat you, the VX-3HD starts making a lot more sense.

VX-5HD: When Better Glass and Better Turrets Actually Matter

The VX-5HD is where Leupold stops pretending this is just a basic hunting optic and starts piling on capability. The established VX-5HD family uses a 5:1 zoom ratio and Leupold’s Professional-Grade Optical System. Depending on the configuration, you can also get side focus, Guard-Ion lens coatings, illuminated reticles, and CDS-ZL2 elevation hardware with two revolutions of adjustment.

A 3-15×44 is a good example of why this tier exists. Three power is still useful when the woods get tight, while 15 power gives you substantially more target detail when the country opens up. It is a much broader working envelope than the old 3-9 formula.

But premium glass has a premium-gas-station-receipt problem. Leupold lists legacy VX-5HD 3-15×44 CDS-ZL2 models starting at $1,199.99, with some reticle configurations costing more. At that point, nobody is buying one because a 3-9×40 suddenly became incapable of killing a deer. You are paying for optical performance, adjustment capability, magnification range, and versatility.

VX-5HD Gen 2 Changes the Top of the VX Ladder

There is another wrinkle for 2026: VX-5HD Gen 2. Leupold now offers the newer generation alongside VX-5HD models still listed in the catalog. The Gen 2 family keeps the Professional-Grade Optical System and 5:1 zoom concept while adding a tool-free SpeedSet elevation dial and updated competition-grade adjustments.

The current VX-5HD Gen 2 3-15×44 is listed at $1,499.99. That is a serious jump from the $399.99 VX-Freedom, so the buyer needs to be honest with himself. If you zero once and never touch a turret again, you may be paying for features that spend the rest of their lives sightseeing. If you dial often, hunt across widely varying distances, and care about premium glare control and image quality, those features become much easier to justify.

VX-Freedom vs. VX-3HD vs. VX-5HD: The Money Table

Feature

VX-Freedom

VX-3HD

VX-5HD / Gen 2

Core Role

Value hunting and general-purpose use

Lightweight premium hunting

Premium hunting with broader adjustment and magnification capability

Representative Model

3-9×40 Hunt-Plex

3.5-10×40 CDS-ZL Duplex

3-15×44

Current Listed Price

$399.99

$599.99

$1,199.99 legacy VX-5HD; $1,499.99 VX-5HD Gen 2 3-15×44

Optical System

Advanced Optical System

Elite Optical System

Professional-Grade Optical System

Zoom Ratio

3:1

3:1 on common hunting models

5:1

Representative Tube

1 inch

1 inch

30 mm on 3-15×44 models

Elevation System

Finger click on Hunt-Plex model

CDS-ZL

CDS-ZL2 on many VX-5HD models; SpeedSet system on Gen 2

Best Fit

Budget-conscious hunter, rimfire, basic AR or general rifle

Backcountry and low-light hunter who wants CDS capability

Serious hunter who uses broader magnification, dials frequently, or wants premium optics

Which Leupold VX Scope Should You Actually Buy?

Buy the VX-Freedom if you want to keep the rifle light, the controls simple, and the bill under control. For a whitetail rifle, rimfire, general-purpose bolt gun, or an AR that does not need tactical Christmas-tree glass, the Freedom still covers an enormous amount of ground.

Buy the VX-3HD if hunting is the point of the rifle and better low-light performance matters more to you than piling on maximum magnification. The CDS-ZL system is also a meaningful upgrade for hunters who want a simple way to dial elevation without going full tactical scope.

Buy the VX-5HD if you are willing to pay substantially more for broader magnification, premium optical performance, more sophisticated adjustment systems, and additional features. This is the tier for somebody who knows exactly why he wants a 5:1 zoom ratio or two revolutions of elevation. If you have to ask what you would do with those features, the VX-3HD may be the smarter buy.

Consider VX-5HD Gen 2 if you are already shopping near the top of the VX family and want Leupold’s latest turret architecture. At $1,499.99 for the current 3-15×44, it is not the value answer. It is the capability answer.

The Duplex Reticle Still Has a Job

One thing that has not become obsolete just because the calendar says 2026 is a clean hunting reticle. The market now offers enough holdover grids to make a geometry teacher sweat, but a duplex remains fast, visible, and wonderfully difficult to overthink.

For the original VX-Freedom test, that simplicity fit the mission perfectly. The reticle was fine enough for precise zeroing on a 1-inch target, but bold enough not to disappear in thin trees. That is exactly why basic duplex-style reticles continue to make sense for a lot of hunting rifles.

Weight Matters More After Mile Six

The original VX-Freedom impressed me at 12.2 ounces. The current 3-9×40 Hunt-Plex is still listed at 12.2 ounces, which means this particular advantage has aged extremely well. A lightweight scope does not make a rifle shoot straighter, but it absolutely changes how the rifle feels after carrying it all day.

The VX-3HD keeps that same basic philosophy. The current 3.5-10×40 CDS-ZL Duplex weighs 13.5 ounces. That is part of what makes the middle tier so compelling. You are adding better low-light-oriented glass and a locking CDS elevation system without attaching an optical boat anchor to the rifle.

VX-5HD models vary more because the line stretches into larger objectives, more magnification, illumination, side focus, and more elaborate turret systems. Once again, there is no free lunch. Capability has weight, size, and dollars attached to it.

Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Specifications From the Test

Model

Leupold VX Freedom 3-9×40

Magnification

3-9 power

Objective Lens

40 mm

Tube

1 inch

Reticle

Simple duplex

Focal Plane

Second focal plane

Weight

12.2 ounces

Windage Adjustment

1/4 MOA

Elevation Adjustment

1/4 MOA

Original Review MSRP

$259.00

Current 3-9×40 Hunt-Plex Listed Price

$399.99

Lifetime Coverage Still Sweetens the Deal

Like every other Leupold riflescope, the VX Freedom comes with Leupold’s lifetime performance guarantee. That remains one of the strongest pieces of the value argument because it follows the optic rather than depending on the original owner hanging onto a receipt for the next few decades.

At the original $259.00 MSRP, this one was hard to beat for a rimfire, hunting gun or your shiny new AR. At a current listed $399.99 for the 3-9×40 Hunt-Plex, the competition is stiffer, and the decision deserves more thought. But if what you want is lightweight, simple, durable glass without paying for features you will never touch, the VX-Freedom still knows exactly what its job is.

The VX-3HD is the sweet spot for hunters who want a meaningful optical and turret upgrade while keeping weight under control. The VX-5HD and VX-5HD Gen 2 are where you go when broader magnification, premium glass, and more capable dialing systems become requirements instead of luxuries.

That is really the answer to the whole Leupold VX scope buyer’s guide. Do not buy the most expensive scope because the internet told you expensive glass is mandatory. Buy the level whose features you will actually use. The deer will not be checking the receipt.

Leupold VX Line Pros and Cons: Where Each Tier Wins

Pros: VX-Freedom stays light, simple, and relatively affordable; VX-3HD adds stronger low-light-oriented optics and CDS-ZL without excessive weight; VX-5HD expands magnification, glass quality, and adjustment capability; Leupold backs its riflescopes with a lifetime performance guarantee.

Cons: Current VX-Freedom pricing is substantially higher than the original $259.00 review price; VX-3HD costs more for features some hunters may never use; VX-5HD and Gen 2 pricing climbs rapidly into premium territory.

Related Reads from GunsAmerica Digest

Review: Leupold VX-3HD 3.5-10X40 Riflescope

Leupold Mark 5HD Review with Tracking Test

The Gold Ring Standard: Leupold VX-6HD Gen 2 Review

Visit Leupold to learn more about the VX Freedom by clicking here.

The VX-Freedom still proves you do not need mortgage-payment money to put dependable Leupold glass on a rifle.
