Bumble<\/a>, ever hear of it? Me neither. Apparently. it\u2019s a dating app geared toward \u201cshaking up outdated gender norms\u201d where \u201cwomen make the first move,” according to ithe website.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd banned users from posting gun pics in their profiles, and in a recent interview with Fast Company<\/a>, she explained the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started the company [in 2014], I really founded it with one main objective in place, which was accountability,\u201d she said. \u201cHow could we engineer accountability into the internet? How do we make the internet a kinder place?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was that credo that eventually led to the call to ban gun photos.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shocked a lot of people, but for us it was just a no-brainer,\u201d Wolfe Herd said. \u201cIt was just a natural progression of us trying to live our values.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shock was due in part to the fact that Bumble is based in Austin, Texas. She said after the announcement there were \u201cthreats\u201d made against the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not trying to say that we\u2019re preventing anybody that behaves in a responsible way with the proper licensing to be on our platform,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe truly believe that using weapons as a mechanism to attract a date is not right, and we don\u2019t believe in that. We don\u2019t want to validate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolfe Herd doesn\u2019t believe in validating people who lawfully exercise their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. As the co-founder of the Bumble and its chief exec, it’s perfectly within her scope to ban those photos. But it makes absolutely zero sense, especially for a company that purportedly cares about upending \u201cgender norms\u201d and creating a \u201ckinder place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps she\u2019s never heard the ole, \u201cAn armed society is a polite society.\u201d\u00a0 And, maybe she doesn\u2019t realize that nothing says female empowerment quite like a well-armed and well-trained woman. If part of the goal of the app is to push back at a domineering patriarchy then Bumble should be going out of its way to celebrate women who are 2A practitioners, not reinforcing the stereotype, via censorship, that gun ownership is exclusively a male-oriented activity.\u00a0 Women (and men) need to see other women exercising 2A rights!<\/p>\n

What I’m saying is that in an environment where women are empowered to make the first move, they ought to be permitted to post pics of themselves carrying and shooting firearms.\u00a0 Guns in the hands of women don’t just symbolize patriotism, discipline,\u00a0and self-reliance — they also send an unmistakable message to potential suitors, “Sure, I’ll take your\u00a0kindness; but I’ll also command your respect.”<\/p>\n
