Cuomo called the NRA&#8217;s Carry Guard &#8220;murder insurance&#8221; in a recent interview with CNN (<em>Photo: New York Governor&#8217;s Office<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn\u2019t been shy about attacking the National Rifle Association in a transparent bid to earn election-year brownie points, but his latest assault moves beyond gun rights\u2014and he\u2019s urging other governors to follow his lead.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/sites\/governor.ny.gov\/files\/atoms\/files\/GAMC_Letter_to_Governors.pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"cuomo-murder-insurance\" title=\"Gov. Cuomo Calls NRA Carry Guard 'Murder Insurance'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter to an unnamed set of state governors<\/a>, Cuomo asks his counterparts to restrict the NRA\u2019s ability to offer its \u201cCarry Guard\u201d concealed carry insurance. Cuomo claims the insurance program covers \u201cintentional criminal conduct resulting in bodily harm,\u201d and his Department of Financial Services has already cracked down on the insurance companies working with the NRA to provide this product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShockingly, we have discovered that this product is being sold in other states across the country,\u201d Cuomo says in the letter. \u201cI urge you to examine your laws and determine whether or not this product is being illegally sold in your state, and I encourage you to follow New York\u2019s lead and block the sale of these NRA products if they are illegal, or to outlaw these products if they are not already prohibited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be highly unusual for a state to allow an insurance company to reimburse for an illegal activity. They call it &#8216;murder insurance,'&#8221; the governor told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/06\/politics\/cuomo-new-york-nra-new-day-cnntv\/index.html?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=fbCNN&amp;utm_content=2018-08-06T15:38:51\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"cuomo-murder-insurance\" title=\"Gov. Cuomo Calls NRA Carry Guard 'Murder Insurance'\" rel=\"bookmark\">New York Gun Control Architect Sheldon Silver Sentenced to 7 Years in Federal Prison<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s bit comes as a response to a lawsuit brought by the NRA that claims the state\u2019s regulatory apparatus has illegally coerced financial companies\u2014like those that back Carry Guard\u2014into halting business ties with the gun-rights group. The suit claims that the NRA has been the victim of a \u201cblacklisting campaign\u201d that violates their constitutional rights to speech and association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical differences aside, our client believes the tactics employed by these public officials are aimed to deprive the NRA of its First Amendment right to speak freely about gun-related issues and in defense of the Second Amendment,\u201d says William A. Brewer III, partner at Brewer, Attorneys &amp; Counselors and counsel to the NRA. \u201cWe believe these actions are outside the authority of DFS and fail to honor the principles which require public officials to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo has filed a motion to dismiss the suit, and he\u2019s taken to the cable news networks to push his message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the NRA represents an extremist group,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cI believe they&#8217;ve been counterproductive for gun owners in this country. Broadly speaking, the insurance covers legal fees if a policyholder is involved in a self-defense shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo claims the NRA\u2019s product is illegal under New York State law, and the Department of Financial Services has already fined several insurance companies hundreds of thousands of dollars for participating in the NRA\u2019s program.
