Any doubt in my mind that Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed by the U.S. Senate and appointed to the nation’s highest court was instantly erased when I read a letter penned<\/a> over the weekend by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n

Why would I care what Cuomo, a hysterically anti-gun politician, thinks?\u00a0 Because sometimes the ultimate measure of a man is not how much his fanboys love him but how much his enemies fear him.\u00a0 Make no mistake about it.\u00a0 Kavanaugh has Cuomo and others (Schumer, Feinstein, etc.) shaking in their boots.<\/p>\n

“Today I write to underscore another grave danger represented by the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh,” wrote Cuomo. “Kavanaugh’s judicial record shows that he believes the Constitution gives an unlimited right to carry even the most dangerous assault weapons,” adding, he threatens “to overturn the NY Safe Act and put New Yorkers in danger. He must be stopped.”<\/p>\n

Cuomo also writes that the 53-year-old D.C. circuit judge will “attack progressive values,” and will “set the gun safety movement back for generations to come.”<\/p>\n

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I call on you to do everything you can to stop Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation and protect our communities from the scourge of gun violence,” pleads Cuomo.<\/p>\n

Wait.\u00a0 So, let’s get this straight.\u00a0 Kavanaugh could overturn the woefully misguided NY SAFE Act, declare bans on black rifles unconstitutional, kick the Nannystate movement in the nuts (figuratively speaking, of course) and retard the progress of hoplophobic\u00a0groups nationwide.\u00a0 All I can say is, winner, winner chicken\u00a0dinner!<\/p>\n

Yes, all of that is possible.\u00a0 Not just my take but that of at least one legal expert and political wonk.<\/p>\n

“One of the things that’s most worrisome to gun control advocates is that Judge Kavanaugh believes only longstanding gun restrictions are constitutionally permissible, which suggests that novel innovative ways to solve gun violence problems would not be acceptable in Judge Kavanaugh’s view,” said UCLA law professor Adam Winkler in an interview with NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Research fellow Trevor Burrus of the Cato Institute agreed, also telling NPR that with Kavanaugh on the bench the court could strike down “10-day waiting periods, magazine restrictions, assault weapons bans, things like that.”\u00a0 Burrus cautioned that the only wild card would be Justice Samuel Alito who might be “a little bit less protective of gun rights,” but would “still a reliable vote” in favor of the 2A.<\/p>\n

Cuomo’s fear of Kavanaugh is real.\u00a0 Which makes him the perfect guy for the job.\u00a0 And as an Empire State<\/a> resident, I can confidently say to our elected officials in the U.S. Senate that on behalf of all gun-owning New Yorkers you must do everything you can to appoint judge Kavanaugh to SCOTUS.\u00a0 The future of our safety and right to keep and bear arms depends on it.<\/p>\n
