Filed in Shasta County Superior Court, the groups want to block the requirement until a \u201creliable and functional registration system\u201d is implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPredictably the state of California wants to take guns away from the law abiding. In this instance they couldn\u2019t even build a working system to respect gun owners\u2019 rights,\u201d explained CGF Chairman Gene Hoffman. \u201cWe simply want to allow those who want to comply with the law to have more time with a working registration system.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/exclusive-public-records-prove-california-gun-registration-was-a-total-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-groups-sue-california-doj-over-registration-disaster\" title=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\">Exclusive: Public Records Prove California Gun Registration Was a Total Disaster<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Not only did the registration website crash periodically, but it was leaking personal information. Users would have access to the home address, telephone number, email and Driver\u2019s License number of someone else, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/exclusive-public-records-prove-california-gun-registration-was-a-total-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-groups-sue-california-doj-over-registration-disaster\" title=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\">NRA-ILA reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Compliance numbers further indicate just how poorly managed the system was. A grand total of 6,213 individuals successfully registered 13,519 \u201cassault weapons\u201d before the July 1st deadline, according to public records request obtained by GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Response-Letter-e1531333427653.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-groups-sue-california-doj-over-registration-disaster\" title=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-93973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Response-Letter-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a>\n<p>While the number of so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d equipped with bullet buttons in the Golden State is unknown, it\u2019s fair to assume there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in circulation. Sales on long guns in 2016 alone exceeded 750,000, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/article127523969.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-groups-sue-california-doj-over-registration-disaster\" title=\"Gun Groups Sue California DOJ Over Registration Disaster\">Sacbee<\/a>. Presumably many of those are AR-pattern rifles with bullet buttons because of the impending ban that was set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new laws, gun owners were given one year to register their ARs, or until Jan. 1, 2018. However, lawmakers pushed back that date to July 1, 2018. Even with the added time, the whole thing was a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a bad version of \u2018Catch-22\u2019,\u201d Gottlieb observed. \u201cThe government required registration by the deadline, but the online registration failed and people couldn\u2019t register. They\u2019re required to obey the law, but the system broke down, making it impossible to obey the law. Now these people face the possibility of being prosecuted.
