Failure to comply may result in a civil infraction and a fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also requires gun owners to report any lost or stolen firearm to authorities within 24 hours. Failure to do so may result in a civil infraction and a fine of up to $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle Mayor Jenny A. Durkan applauded the action as a way to &#8220;save lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the kind of action we need to save lives. While we can\u2019t prevent every gun death or injury, we can take steps to help prevent future tragedies,\u201d said Mayor Durkan in a<a href=\"https:\/\/durkan.seattle.gov\/2018\/07\/mayor-durkan-celebrates-city-councils-passage-of-her-legislation-to-reduce-gun-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"safely-store-guns-seattle-law\" title=\"Failure to Secure Guns May Lead to $10,000 Fine Under New Seattle Law\"> press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that unsecured, unsafely stored guns help fuel this crisis of violence because they are more likely to cause accidents, fall into the wrong hands, or be used in suicides. Requiring that gun owners responsibly store their guns can help make our communities safer places to live. The status quo clearly hasn\u2019t kept guns out of the hands of children or other unauthorized users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law will take effect 180 days after Mayor Durkan signs it.\u00a0 But maybe not.\u00a0 Gun-rights activists are currently making moves to upend this misguided storage mandate.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;The Second Amendment Foundation&#8217;s attorneys are already working on a lawsuit to overturn this law,&#8221; said Alan Gottlieb, founder of SAF in an email to GunsAmerica.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Washington State has a firearms preemption statute that Seattle violated by enacting this law,&#8221;\u00a0he continued. &#8220;They have already lost in court to SAF on preemption when they attempted to ban firearms on city property.
