Germany produced about 426,000, but because few ended up on North American shores, NFA-compliant models are worth nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/detail\/58\/571\/german-stg-44\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sturmgewehr44-shredder-museum\" title=\"Sturmgewehr 44 Saved from the Shredder, Sent to Museum\">$30,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Chesapeake Police Department confiscated the StG44 in April of 2009 after finding one in a van involved in several hit-and-runs, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pilotonline.com\/news\/government\/local\/article_c1c67b54-681e-11e8-acb3-a36634115f42.amp.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sturmgewehr44-shredder-museum\" title=\"Sturmgewehr 44 Saved from the Shredder, Sent to Museum\">Virginian-Pilot<\/a>. The driver, Eugene McGee, was convicted of felony hit-and-run and had his Second Amendment rights revoked.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than destroy the firearm, the city decided in 2010 to donate it. Police spokesman Leo Kosinski told the Pilot that he isn\u2019t sure why it\u2019s taken so long for the donation to occur, though he suspects that whoever came up with the idea has since retired.<\/p>\n<p>The firearm will be sent to the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/origins-of-the-hk93-ak74-m16a1-and-ar18\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sturmgewehr44-shredder-museum\" title=\"Sturmgewehr 44 Saved from the Shredder, Sent to Museum\" rel=\"bookmark\">Historical Origins of the HK93, AK74, M16A1 and AR18<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>McGee said that the gun had belonged to his grandfather, a WWII veteran who served as an Army sergeant. Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/BOOK-RIFLES-Encyclopedic-Reference-Book\/dp\/B0000EGN3A\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sturmgewehr44-shredder-museum\" title=\"Sturmgewehr 44 Saved from the Shredder, Sent to Museum\">notes<\/a>, however, that \u201cSturmgewehr\u201d fits the rifle\u2019s function and chambering much better than \u201cMachinenpistole\u201d (231). The MP43\/44 was not a submachine gun in the conventional sense of the term (i.e., a small, pistol-caliber weapon). The Sturmgewehr 44 fires the 7.92\u00d733mm Kurz, a cartridge more like the AK-47\u2019s 7.62&#215;39 than the 9x19mm Parabellum fired by most submachine guns.<\/p>\n<p>This is why many point to the StG44 as one of the first select-fire intermediate cartridge firearms, and its conceptual descendants include the AK-47 and the M16.<\/p>\n<p>Though the Germans produced as many as 5,000 StG44s per month by the war\u2019s end, they introduced the exceptionally effective rifle too late to turn the Allied tide (Smith 230).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">***<a
