Oklahoma City police have released the names of the two armed citizens who stopped an active shooter situation last week at a lakeside restaurant.<\/p>\n

Police Chief Bo Matthews\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0during a Friday news conference that Juan Carlos Nazario, 35, and Bryan Whittle, 39, each retrieved a handgun from their vehicles when a 28-year-old man opened fire with a handgun of his own at a crowded restaurant called Louie\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just there enjoying the lake scenery and heard shots,\u201d Nazario told\u00a0NBC News<\/a>. \u201cAt that point I zoned out and had to take action. Just glad no innocent bystanders\u2019 lives were taken, and unfortunately a life was lost, but he had a choice to drop the weapon and chose otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nazario said<\/a> he confronted the suspect in the parking lot and told him multiple times to drop his gun. When the man raised his firearm to shoot into the parking lot, Nazario fired two shots and \u201che just fell to the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three restaurant-goers were shot, but all three are in good condition, Matthews said.<\/p>\n

Though police have also credited Whittle with playing a role in the incident, it isn\u2019t yet clear what actions Whittle took. Both men have said<\/a> they never crossed paths.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can say they\u2019re heroes, which is a good thing to say,\u201d Matthews told reporters. \u201cBut I think they stopped a very tragic situation from going any further.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whittle,\u00a0during an interview with USA Today<\/a><\/u>, echoed Matthews\u2019 sentiment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just did what needed to be done to stop the threat.\u00a0Nothing special,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of people would have done the same given the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just can’t understand being called a hero when someone’s life was taken,\u201d Nazario told USA Today.<\/p>\n

When asked whether Nazario or Whittle had a concealed carry license, Matthews brushed the question aside because neither man was carrying when they retrieved their weapons from their vehicles.<\/p>\n

Matthews also said they won\u2019t have to worry about facing criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were protecting somebody else\u2019s life,\u201d he said. \u201cI can tell you historically \u2026 these guys were protecting somebody else\u2019s life, I would think more than likely they would not be filed on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police are still searching for a possible motive for the shooting. Matthew said the suspect doesn\u2019t appear to have had any connection to the restaurant or anyone who was inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks to me like a random event,\u201d Matthews said.\u00a0\u201cI mean, in an act like this, you would have to assume that he probably had a little bit of a mental illness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Subsequent reports have all but confirmed Matthews hunch. The suspect posted a series of disturbing videos on YouTube in the months leading up to the shooting.<\/p>\n

In his most recent video, uploaded on April 27, the shooter says his \u201clife is in danger\u201d and that \u201cSatan is after me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He describes hearing tapping, cracking and loud booms in his home, and believes that \u201cthe devil is after my (expletive)\u00a0ass.\u201d<\/p>\n

He asks for \u201creal people\u201d to contact him because he’s under a \u201cdemonic attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m feeling really bad right now,\u201d he said. \u201cI’m super stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident comes two weeks after Republican Gov. Mary Fallin\u00a0vetoed<\/a><\/u> constitutional carry, and she used the foiled mass murder to underscore the current laws as\u00a0\u201ceffective, appropriate and minimal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am thankful that under the concealed-carry and open-carry laws that I have signed as governor, two armed citizens had the ability to protect and save the lives of our fellow Oklahomans,\u201d\u00a0she said Friday. \u201cThis is not the time to debate the NRA\u2019s efforts to repeal Oklahoma\u2019s regulations assuring safety and training for those who carry guns. This is a time to offer up prayers to the victims of this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
