“Fuck the NRA,” says congressional candidate Pat Davis in a new ad.<\/p>\n

“Their pro-gun policies have resulted in dead children, dead mothers and dead fathers,” he continues.<\/p>\n

Davis, a current member of the Albuquerque City Council, is hoping to join the House this Fall as the Representative for New Mexico’s first congressional district.<\/p>\n

No doubt that this explicit anti-NRA television spot was a way for him to make a splash, to get his name out there on the interwebs, to get people talking. Well, it worked. I took the bait.<\/p>\n

But talk is one thing, getting votes is another.<\/p>\n

Taking such an illogical position against a civil rights organization is bound to backfire.\u00a0 Even if one wanted to argue that gun laws were responsible for gun crime (as opposed to the outlaws pulling the trigger), the notion that the NRA’s policies have had a net negative effect on society is statistically inaccurate.<\/p>\n

Research overwhelmingly shows<\/a> that guns are more\u00a0frequently used by good guys in self-defense than they are used by bad guys to perpetrate crime.\u00a0 That margin could be as high as 25 to 1.\u00a0 Or 2.5 million defensive gun uses compared to 100,000 criminal offenses annually. Accordingly, the NRA’s policies have saved the lives of many children, mothers,\u00a0and fathers.<\/p>\n

\ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n

Attempts to restrict gun ownership or to leave law-abiding citizens defenseless is far more injurious to public safety than the alternative. Empowering people to exercise their right to keep and bear arms.\u00a0 Just based on the numbers alone.\u00a0 Saying nothing of the moral obligation to protect one’s natural right of self-defense.<\/p>\n

Oh, and another thing, NRA’s strength and power comes not from Chris Cox or Wayne LaPierre. But the group’s five million members — many of them registered voters.\u00a0 Saying “F*ck the NRA” is tantamount to saying “F*ck five million voters.”\u00a0 Can’t imagine that helping Davis come November.<\/p>\n

To its credit, the NRA took the high road when asked about Davis’ remark.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would hate to dignify this with a response because it\u2019s just crass language and a desperate attempt to get attention,\u201d said NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
