(<em>Photo: Facebook<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Every five years New Yorkers must re-certify the registration of their \u201cassault weapon,\u201d under the New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/ny-lawmakers-want-to-double-down-on-gun-control-despite-safe-act-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act<\/a>. State police announced last week that the deadline for recertification is quickly approaching for many black rifle owners.<\/p>\n<p>The SAFE Act was rammed through the Legislature in 2013 by emperor Cuomo on the heels of the mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. <em>Never let a crisis go to waste!<\/em> Five years from the approximate enactment date is now, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState law requires that assault weapon registrations must be recertified every five years from the date the registration was filed.\u00a0 Under NYS Penal Law Section 400, failure to recertify will result in a revocation of the registration,\u201d reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyspnews.com\/article_display.cfm?article_id=61803\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90333\" style=\"width: 737px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-11-at-3.15.39-PM.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90333\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\" class=\"wp-image-90333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-11-at-3.15.39-PM.png\" alt=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\" width=\"727\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-11-at-3.15.39-PM.png 727w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-11-at-3.15.39-PM-150x24.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-11-at-3.15.39-PM-400x64.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The penalty for failing to register an &#8220;assault weapon.&#8221;\u00a0 The deadline for registration was April 15, 2014.(<em>Photo: SAFEAct.NY.Gov<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If one\u2019s registration expires then one is in violation of the law. Because possession of an unregistered \u201cassault weapon\u201d is a Class A misdemeanor. Meaning, New Yorkers could spend up to a year in prison and get slapped with a $1,000 fine if they don\u2019t comply.<\/p>\n<p>The good news, if you want to call it that, is that recertification is free. And relatively straightforward. There is an <a href=\"https:\/\/troopers.ny.gov\/Firearms\/assault_weapons.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">online portal<\/a> that allows one to do it as well as a downloadable form (I\u2019ve embedded it at the bottom) that can be sent to State Police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the recertification process, licensees must affirm that they are not prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law, and must also confirm certain personal information,\u201d states the announcement.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/70000-new-york-permit-holders-now-felons-failing-register-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">70,000 New York Permit Holders Are Now Felons for Failing to Register Handguns<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, the whole idea of having to register guns with the government is asinine. Government is the reason we <em>need<\/em> (notice I didn\u2019t say, \u201cwant\u201d) ARs and AKs. \u201cBlack rifles are kryptonite to tyranny,\u201d as Clay likes to say. I&#8217;m sure mass killers will follow this restriction to the T. (<em>Photo: SAFEAct.NY.Gov<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Boneheaded it is for another reason. No violent killer or street thug is sitting in his basement right now preparing a recertification form.\u00a0 Criminals don&#8217;t give a rip about the law.\u00a0 Especially not enough to\u00a0self-report their\u00a0status as an armed prohibited person to police.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with any common sense knows this.\u00a0 Then again, the overlords in Albany didn&#8217;t conceive the SAFE Act to stop bad guys from getting scary-looking guns.\u00a0 They designed it to chill\u00a0the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens.\u00a0 To make it increasingly burdensome for good guys to exercise a fundamental right.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why it contains all that nonsense about only putting seven rounds in a 10-round magazine, recertifying assault weapons, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/70000-new-york-permit-holders-now-felons-failing-register-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">registering handguns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are the ones (I live in NY now) with the target on our backs.\u00a0 Not the criminals.\u00a0 If there is a silver lining to all this it&#8217;s that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/frankminiter\/2015\/06\/24\/nearly-one-million-new-yorkers-didnt-register-their-assault-weapons\/#44aa644f702f\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-yorkers-re-certify-your-assault-weapon-registration\" title=\"New Yorkers: Re-Certify Your Assault Weapon Registration (or Spend A Year In Jail)!\">about 1 million New Yorkers have silently refused<\/a> to comply with the SAFE Act&#8217;s black rifle registration scheme.\u00a0 These patriots are betting that one day sanity will be restored to the Empire State, that the SAFE Act will be fully repealed.<\/p>\n<p>But until that moment, memo to Gov.
