Revenue generated from hunting licenses and taxes on guns and ammo generates approximately 60 percent of any given state\u2019s wildlife and conservation fund.<\/p>\n<p>But the number of hunters has significantly decreased over the last fifty years as more Americans move to urban and suburban areas, and that has conservationists worried, according to a recent report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/03\/20\/593001800\/decline-in-hunters-threatens-how-u-s-pays-for-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"decline-hunting-threat-conservation\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\">National Public Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a change in the way we finance fish and wildlife conservation, we can expect the list of federally threatened and endangered species to grow from nearly 1,600 species today to perhaps thousands more in the future,\u201d a panel on sustaining America&#8217;s fish and wildlife resources\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishwildlife.org\/application\/files\/8015\/1382\/2345\/BlueRibbonPanel_ShortReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"decline-hunting-threat-conservation\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\">recently warned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only about five percent of Americans hunt, half the number who participated in the sport in the 1960s. That trend is expected to accelerate as Baby Boomers age out without enough youngsters to take their place. But hunters already open their pocketbooks to protect wildlife, so many efforts have focused on renewing interest in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>One such organization in Wisconsin recruits and trains new hunters by reaching out to less traditional hunting demographics. NPR interviewed first-time hunter Beth Wojcik, a graduate student who doesn\u2019t fit the standard hunting mold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m actually a vegetarian,\u201d she admitted. \u201cStudying wildlife ecology, though, I gained a better understanding of how we\u2019re managing wildlife, and hunting is an effective way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89763\" style=\"width: 805px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"decline-hunting-threat-conservation\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89763\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\" class=\"wp-image-89763 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2.jpg\" alt=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\" width=\"795\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2.jpg 795w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2-400x279.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hunting-graph-2-768x535.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-89763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<em>Graph: NPR<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) told us via email that they\u2019re also working at the state and local levels to give hunters more access to the land they need.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/killing-conservation-big-game-hunting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"decline-hunting-threat-conservation\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\">Killing in the Name of Conservation: How Big Game Hunting Prevents Extinction<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>NSSF is working with Congress to push through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/2950\/text\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"decline-hunting-threat-conservation\" title=\"Decline in Hunting Poses Serious Threat to Conservation Efforts\">Making Public Lands Public Act<\/a>. This initiative would ensure that a portion of funds are permanently made available from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for land acquisition to ensure the public has access to the more than 38 million acres of isolated public lands either through ownership of private properties or geographic boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>At the state level, the NSSF has been working to expand Sunday Hunting, and they recently secured victories in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The NSSF\u2019s focus on the hunting community is well-founded.\u00a0 But that still may not be enough to right the ship.\u00a0 The non-gun owning public may need to start chipping in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all value the resource to different degrees,\u201d Jim Wipperfurth, who volunteers in Wisconsin\u2019s outreach program, told NPR. \u201cWe put our money where our mouth is, we\u2019re involved. But for the general public, to get them to spend the money is the difficult part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They may value it in their mind, he says, but that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re willing to spend a dollar on it.<\/p>\n<p>NPR did not address the elephant in the room.\u00a0 The war on hunters and the demonization of gun owners as a contributing factor to the decline in hunting.\u00a0 &#8220;Guns are evil,&#8221; so says Hollywood, the media, Dems in Washinton, educators, corporate elites, activists groups and on and on.\u00a0 So, it should come as no surprise that young people are
