Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed Friday The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.<\/a><\/p>\n

The good news?\u00a0 The bill sets aside approx. $400 million to harden schools\u00a0and improve mental health services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Funds may be used for mobile crisis teams, the purchase of metal detectors, bulletproof glass and the hiring of student resource officers, reports\u00a0NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bad news?\u00a0 Adults under the age of 21 are prohibited from purchasing firearms.\u00a0 Bump stocks are banned.\u00a0 Those caught possessing, buying or selling reciprocating stocks (and similar devices) will face felony charges<\/a>.\u00a0 By the looks of it, there is no grandfather clause for current owners.\u00a0 And finally, there will be a 3-day waiting period for firearm purchases.\u00a0 Even for gun owners with concealed carry permits.<\/p>\n

“Every student in Florida has the right to learn in a safe environment, and every parent has the right to send their kids to school knowing that they will return safely at the end of the day,” said the Republican governor in his address. “Today, I am signing bipartisan legislation that helps us achieve that.”<\/p>\n

The National Rifle Association applauded the school security and mental health aspects of the legislation but panned the waiting period and the age restriction for gun purchases. It did not lament the ban on bump stocks that immediately turns law-abiding citizens into felons. Because the NRA supports prohibiting bump stocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual,\u201d said Chris W. Cox, executive director, National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecuring our schools and protecting the constitutional rights of Americans are not mutually exclusive,” he continued.\u00a0 “Instead of looking to the root cause of this premeditated violence, the gun control provisions in this law wrongly blame millions of Floridians who safely and responsibly exercise their right to self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
