Virginia Beach police told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/atf-investigating-after-congressional-candidate-cut-apart-ar-15\/291-526898428\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mallard-atf-ar-cut-barrel-sbr\" title=\"Candidate's Anti-Gun Demonstration Backfires: Sawing Barrel Off AR Leads to ATF Investigation\">local media<\/a> that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is investigating the incident.<\/p>\n<p>While Mallard claims the rifle was \u201cinoperable\u201d before she went after it with an angle grinder, she clearly had no idea that her actions were both illegal and ineffective at \u201cdestroying\u201d the firearm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurrounded by guns, our family had guns my whole life,\u201d she begins, in what appears to be an attempt to demonstrate her pro-gun street cred.<\/p>\n<p>Her family used firearms for \u201chunting, protection, and recreation,\u201d but her husband\u2019s AR-15 could never be used for any such legal purpose: \u201cAfter last week, I told him that I wanted this gun outta my house!\u201d she opines in the video.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/shannon-watts-embarrasses-herself-tweet\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mallard-atf-ar-cut-barrel-sbr\" title=\"Candidate's Anti-Gun Demonstration Backfires: Sawing Barrel Off AR Leads to ATF Investigation\">\u00a0Shannon Watts Shows Ignorance, Completely Embarrasses Herself with this Tweet<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>But she knew that selling the firearm wouldn\u2019t satisfy the demands of her anti-gun constituents. She had a better idea, one that would ensure the gun never resided in \u201canyone else\u2019s house either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After slicing the barrel a few inches north of the receiver, she stands and delivers her manifesto. \u201cI\u2019m marching with the students, marching for their lives,\u201d she declares.<\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width: 0px;overflow: hidden;line-height: 0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo those students in Florida, and across our country, keep standing up, and speaking truth to power! Thee gun owners heard you and we\u2019re going to stand by you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the thousands of (hilarious) comments from gun owners informing her of the felony she videotaped herself committing, she says she\u2019s \u201cnot backing down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She surrendered the firearm to law enforcement, she claims in the video caption, but wonders why \u201call the NRA trolls out there\u201d are \u201cmore outraged about me taking a gun out of circulation than about our children being murdered in our schools?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mallard, a Democrat, is running for Virginia&#8217;s 2nd Congressional District and hoping to oust Republican Congressman Scott Taylor. The district has been under Republican control since 2011, but the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee listed it as one of their <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Virginia%27s_2nd_Congressional_District_election,_2018\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"mallard-atf-ar-cut-barrel-sbr\" title=\"Candidate's Anti-Gun Demonstration Backfires: Sawing Barrel Off AR Leads to ATF Investigation\">initial targets<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Mallard\u2019s video doesn\u2019t seem to have helped her bid. Of the 12,000 reactions to her video, 10,000 are either a laughing or an angry emoji.
