Yes, as a New Yorker (I live in Western NY, not the Big Apple), it pains me to report that Senate Dems introduced nine new gun control bills. What Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins referred to as \u201csmart\u201d gun safety legislation (see video).<\/p>\n<p>Let me be the first to say that there is nothing intelligent about the bills these feckless politicans proposed. In typical New York fashion, these bills chill the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens while doing nothing &#8212; nothing at all &#8212; to combat violent criminals.<\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width: 0px;overflow: hidden;line-height: 0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The List<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of what was put forth.\u00a0 Note, the descriptons are not mine but copy from the Dems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prohibit Bump Stocks and Mods That Increase Rate of Fire: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s6902\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.6902<\/a>, introduced by Senator Brad Hoylman, will make it a Class D Felony to possess a bump stock or similar device. Bump stocks were utilized in the Las Vegas shooting, which dramatically increased the rate of fire and contributed to the high number of casualites.<\/li>\n<li>Establish Extreme Risk Protection Orders: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s7133\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.7133<\/a>, introduced by Senator Brian Kavanagh, will allow courts to issue an order that would seize or prohibit the sale of guns to individuals who are likely to act in ways that would result in serious harm to themselves or others.<\/li>\n<li>Prohibit Possession of a Firearm by Anyone Who Commits a Hate Crime: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s7072\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.7072<\/a>, introduced by Senator Brian Kavanagh, will add hate crimes to the list of offenses that disqualify offenders from possessing a firearm.<\/li>\n<li>Effective Background Checks: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/S5808\/amendment\/A\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.5808-A<\/a>, introduced by Senate Democratic Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris, will establish a ten day waiting period, extending the current three day period, to conduct background checks for individuals attempting to purchase a firearm. This legislation will also require licensed firearm dealers to report the criminal purchase of a weapon and will require background checks for any employees authorized to possess or transfer firearms.<\/li>\n<li>Prohibit Undetectable Firearms: This bill,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s5829\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\"> S.5829<\/a>, introduced by Senator Kevin Parker, will prohibit firearms, rifles, or shotguns that cannot be detected by x-ray, magnetometer or metal detector and make their sale, transport, possession or manufacture a Class D Felony.<\/li>\n<li>Create a Firearm Violence Research Institute: This bill,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s4363\/amendment\/original\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\"> S.4363<\/a>, introduced by Senator Roxanne Persaud, will create an institute to study the causes and conditions that lead to gun violence and develop methods of prevention.<\/li>\n<li>Allow Victims Of Negligent Manufacturers To Seek Compensation: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s5922\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.5922<\/a>, introduced by Senator Jamaal Bailey, will overturn the legal holding that prevents victims and their families from seeking compensation from gun manufacturers found to negligently market firearms to irresponsible buyers.<\/li>\n<li>Enact the \u201cChildren\u2019s Weapon Accident Prevention Act\u201d: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/S3355\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.3355<\/a>, introduced by Senator Liz Krueger, will make it a crime to fail to securely store a weapon to prevent injury and death due to use or handling unintended by the person authorized to possess the weapon.<\/li>\n<li>Close the Out Of State Resident Mental Health Record Loophole: This bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s7605\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">S.7605<\/a>, introduced by Senator Brian Kavanagh, will close a loophole in state law and allow the state to check the mental health records of an out of state resident when that person applies for a state gun permit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/70000-new-york-permit-holders-now-felons-failing-register-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">\u00a070,000 New York Permit Holders Are Now Felons for Failing to Register Handguns<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe must continue to take bold steps to reduce gun violence throughout New York State by passing sensible gun safety legislation,\u201d\u00a0Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our responsibility to protect our communities. Enacting this common sense legislation will help save lives by keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and banning tools to make legal guns more dangerous,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Typical dog and pony show.\u00a0 Where a bunch of do-nothing weasels get up on stage to recite the same old B.S. about &#8220;protecting communities&#8221; and &#8220;saving lives&#8221; and &#8220;sensible&#8221; laws and &#8220;common sense&#8221; and yadda, yadda, yadda.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard it so many times before that it&#8217;s nauseating.\u00a0 It really is.<\/p>\n<p>That said, my favorite bill of the bunch is the call to waste taxpayer dollars on a Firearm Violence Research Institute.\u00a0 WTF?\u00a0 Like we really need a state-funded agency to tell us who is responsible for the vast majority of gun murders?\u00a0 I can answer that right now. Violent gangsters and drug dealers (I&#8217;m not even being glib, a number of cities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/sacramento-adopts-plan-reduce-gun-violence-without-restricting-2a-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-senate-dems-introduce-gun-control\" title=\"NY Senate Dems Introduce 9 \u2018Smart\u2019 Gun Control Bills\">have done research on this only to find that a very small percentage of violent offenders<\/a> were responsible for most of gun violence in their cities.
