Really? Act<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Introduced Tuesday by New York Democrats Eliot Engel and Carolyn Maloney, the bill would regulate any flamethrower capable of shooting a flame over six feet in the same manner as a machine gun. The new designation would make flamethrowers nearly impossible to own for anyone except law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation was filed one day after Elon Musk announced that his new \u201cflamethrower\u201d had sold out of the first (and likely only) 20,000 unit run. Musk developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/elon-musk-made-500-flamethrower-sold-15000-units-3-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-seeks-ban-flamethrowers-days-musks-sell\" title=\"Congress Seeks to Ban Flamethrowers Days After Musk\u2019s Sell Out\">rifle-like device<\/a> that looks suspiciously like a roofing torch married to an airsoft rifle. Despite its questionable status as a bonafide flamethrower, Musk raised $5 million selling the gadget at $500 a pop.<\/p>\n<p>At least 20,000 Americans have answered Engel and Maloney\u2019s bill with, \u201cYeah. Really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, Musk\u2019s flamethrower likely wouldn\u2019t be banned under the new legislation. Based on the available video, the device doesn\u2019t look like it shoots a flame more than three or four feet.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/the-xm42-flamethrower\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-seeks-ban-flamethrowers-days-musks-sell\" title=\"Congress Seeks to Ban Flamethrowers Days After Musk\u2019s Sell Out\">The XM42 Flamethrower-What Freedom Looks Like<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>That can\u2019t be said for other legitimate flamethrowers like Ion\u2019s XM42 Flamethrower (reviewed in detail by GunsAmerica\u2019s Jon Hodoway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/the-xm42-flamethrower\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"congress-seeks-ban-flamethrowers-days-musks-sell\" title=\"Congress Seeks to Ban Flamethrowers Days After Musk\u2019s Sell Out\">here<\/a>). The XM42 can shoot a flame up to 25 feet for over 35 seconds with a full tank. It\u2019s the real deal, but it would be almost totally banned under the \u201cFlamethrowers? Really? Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the timing of the legislation appears to have been motivated by Musk\u2019s device, Engel and Maloney have been after flamethrowers since at least last year. Engel propose an identical piece of legislation in 2017 that failed to get out of committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not something I\u2019d thought about before,\u201d said Engel last year, \u201cbecause you\u2019d just assume\u2014right?\u2014that flamethrowers would be regulated. It just causes you to scratch your head and say, \u2018Really?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Engel\u2019s confusion, flamethrowers aren\u2019t regulated for a reason. While you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find an instance of a criminal use of a flamethrower, they\u2019re commonly used for land management and snow removal, not to mention good-old-fashioned \u2018merican fun.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cFlamethrowers? Really? Act\u201d has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations.
