This wasn\u2019t with wind chill or the \u201creal feel\u201d or \u201cfeels like\u201d temperature. It was the actual temperature. There are places in the nation that were colder, yes. But at some point on the thermometer, it didn\u2019t matter if it was 10 degrees, 0 degrees or -10 degrees. It was just cold. The kind of cold that hurts your face. The kind of cold that is dangerous if you\u2019re not dressed appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend of the extreme cold coincided with a group retreat at an up-north camp known for its tubing, skiing, skating, hockey and other outdoor activities. The high temperature for the weekend was 2. And, yes, we would be spending the majority of our time outside.<\/p>\n<p>I agree with whoever said, \u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as bad weather; there\u2019s only bad clothing.\u201d The point is that you can dress or gear up for just about any kind of weather, including extreme cold, for a certain amount of time. So I dressed accordingly and brought some outdoor cold-weather gear with me just in case. I packed an always-with-me backpack. Not so much to survive outside for days on end, but to handle some basic needs and to be a resource for those around me in case there were any problems. And, of course, I had my knife and gun with me. With that, here are my top five (actually, six) pieces of cold-weather gear.\u00a0 Three of them dedicated to creating and retaining heat.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Extra Coat<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-17-at-2.23.06-PM.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85154 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-17-at-2.23.06-PM.png\" alt=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" width=\"326\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-17-at-2.23.06-PM.png 326w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-17-at-2.23.06-PM-150x135.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><\/a>Stuffed into the main compartment of my backpack was a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Columbia-Frost-Fighter-Puffer-Graphite-Mountain\/dp\/B019DY6OSU\/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1516216945&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=men%27s+down+coat\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"> thin, down-filled jacket<\/a>. This would add a useful extra layer if the temperature just got to be too much for me or anyone else. Someday, I&#8217;ll look at the top five the fabrics available to us today \u2014 from synthetics to natural fibers, from polar fleece to wool.<\/p>\n<p>I was already wearing technical fabrics and a layer of wool under a Woolrich-quilted winter coat with a waxed-canvas shell and a sherpa-lined hood.\u00a0 But I wanted to have this easily packable layer available too. Other options could include a fleece jacket or a wool blanket. But down is a terrific insulator and, in this form, hardly takes up any room at all.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Water<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-85146 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_-111x150.jpg 111w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_-768x1043.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_-754x1024.jpg 754w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/61zR7TYlQ0L._SL1500_.jpg 884w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a>Being outdoors, even in extreme cold, requires exertion, and perspiration still occurs. So the need for adequate hydration continues, just like it does in more agreeable weather.<\/p>\n<p>In my weekend travels, I carried a single<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Contigo-THERMALOCK-Matterhorn-Stainless-Bottle\/dp\/B0160LEY90\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"> Contigo Thermalock<\/a> 20-ounce bottle with cold water. This would be mainly for my own hydration. But I could carry hot water \u2014 and it would stay hot for 10 hours \u2014 if I wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>I had no notions of making soup or coffee while out in the cold, but if I were adding a serious hike or not returning to camp lodging for several hours, I\u2019d consider these options. Some survival kits include small bags of drinking water that pack easily and will keep for a long time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Space Blankets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/41rpnUvjDRL._SX425_.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-85145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/41rpnUvjDRL._SX425_-302x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" width=\"302\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/41rpnUvjDRL._SX425_-302x300.jpg 302w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/41rpnUvjDRL._SX425_-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/41rpnUvjDRL._SX425_.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/a>On the possibility that one of our group injured themselves, becoming immobile or unmoveable, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outdoor-Emergency-Survival-Blanket-Military\/dp\/B01N6DDQ2Z\/ref=sr_1_3?s=home-garden&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1516216131&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=space+blanket+survival\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\">space blanket<\/a> could serve several purposes. Of course, I could wrap someone in the foil-like blanket, helping him or her to retain their own body heat. Or, if we built a fire nearby, we could use the space blanket to reflect some of the heat toward the person.<\/p>\n<p>A space blanket can also serve as a giant reflector, helping search parties find a person in trouble. Or it can serve as a tarp to create some kind of temporary shelter or to collect rainwater or snow for a source of water. Rather than figuring out how to use one, I simply carried two. When folded, they hardly take up any space.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Hand-Warmer Packets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/91RmQzKenOL._SX522_.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-85151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/91RmQzKenOL._SX522_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/91RmQzKenOL._SX522_-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/91RmQzKenOL._SX522_-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/91RmQzKenOL._SX522_.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Available to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/HotHands-Hand-Warmers-120-Pairs\/dp\/B06WRS5J1S\/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1516216388&amp;sr=1-4&amp;keywords=hand+warmer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\">purchased by the case<\/a>, a set of these should be in every jacket, every vehicle and every bag or backpack. Nine times out of 10, they\u2019ll be used to warm hands or toes, but several of them used at once inside a space blanket can provide a few hours of critical warmth.<\/p>\n<p>Some winter gloves even come with zippered compartments for hand warmers, and I\u2019ve seen people tuck them into their boots and under their beanies to bring warmth. Activated by exposing the chemicals to air, hand warmers are easily portable and last a long time inside a protective plastic pouch until needed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Flashlight<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gastatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-85152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SurefireFlashlight.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>It should go without saying that a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=flashlight\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-pieces-cold-weather-gear\" title=\"Top Five Pieces of Cold-Weather Gear\"> flashlight<\/a> should be a part of your EDC, but I\u2019ll say it again anyway. For this trip, I carried a small tactical flashlight in my pants pocket as well as extra AA batteries. I made it a point to keep the light and batteries in a pocket where they would benefit from being as close to my body as possible in order for them not to get too cold.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I had two backup flashlights in my backpack \u2014 something I could give to someone else if an urgent situation that required more than one person to handle arose. With a flashlight you, of course, have not only the means to see when it\u2019s dark but also to be able to signal a search party and be seen. I could have gone with just the matches or just the flint and steel, but I opted to double up in case one ran out, one got lost or someone else needed a means to start a fire.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re talking about gear that takes up about as much space as a wallet, so it was no trouble to carry these extras. I just wanted to be absolutely certain I could start a fire if needed.
