Chris Christie signed a bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/2016\/Bills\/S3500\/3477_I1.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lame-duck-christie-signs-bump-stock-ban-new-jerseyans-have-90-days-to-surrender-them\" title=\"Lame Duck Christie Signs Bump Stock Ban: New Jerseyans Have 90 Days to Surrender Them\">S3477\/A5200<\/a>) banning bump stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Effective immediately, it is now illegal to sell or possess the popular rifle accessory.\u00a0 The ban also extends to trigger cranks.<\/p>\n<p>Violators of the new law face stiff penalties, including three-to-five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.<\/p>\n<p>There is no grandfather clause for current bump stock owners.\u00a0 Those who own the devices will have 90 days, until April 15, to turn them over to law enforcement.\u00a0 Retailers who sell bump stocks have 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>The actual use of bump stocks was already prohibited in New Jersey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2018\/01\/nj_bans_gun_device_used_in_las_vegas_shooting_afte.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lame-duck-christie-signs-bump-stock-ban-new-jerseyans-have-90-days-to-surrender-them\" title=\"Lame Duck Christie Signs Bump Stock Ban: New Jerseyans Have 90 Days to Surrender Them\">NJ.com reports<\/a>.\u00a0 Hobbyists and collectors could own the device, however, they could not affix it to a rifle.\u00a0 Now, under the new law, the mere sale or possession is a crime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are simple, easy-to-use devices that increase the firepower and killing power of firearms,&#8221; said former state Sen. Not really known for being a pro-gun politician, Christie&#8217;s 2A stance has nevertheless evolved over the years.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/01\/chris-christie-guns-217437\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lame-duck-christie-signs-bump-stock-ban-new-jerseyans-have-90-days-to-surrender-them\" title=\"Lame Duck Christie Signs Bump Stock Ban: New Jerseyans Have 90 Days to Surrender Them\">2016 interview with Sean Hannity<\/a>, the Republican governor explained why he changed his mind, going from supporting gun control to opposing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell listen, in 1995, Sean, I was 32 years old and I\u2019ve changed my mind,\u201d Christie said. \u201cAnd the biggest reason that I changed my mind was my seven years as a federal prosecutor. What I learned in those seven years was that we were spending much too much time talking about gun laws against law-abiding citizens and not nearly enough time talking about enforcing the gun laws strongly against criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned the difference, and I learned what the limitations are of these laws that people are talking about and how they much, much more greatly infringe on law-abiding citizens than they do anything to prevent crime,\u201d Christie added later. \u201cHaving learned that, my position\u2019s changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where was this sound logic when he signed the bump stock ban?\u00a0 Anyways, New Jersey now joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/mass-becomes-first-state-ban-bump-stocks-vegas-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lame-duck-christie-signs-bump-stock-ban-new-jerseyans-have-90-days-to-surrender-them\" title=\"Lame Duck Christie Signs Bump Stock Ban: New Jerseyans Have 90 Days to Surrender Them\">Massachusetts<\/a>, which also recently voted to ban bump stocks.
