(<em>Photo: Elyssa Cherney \/ Chicago Tribune<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Details are sparse at the moment, but local news affiliates in Chicago are reporting a self-defense shooting involving a 58-year-old concealed carrier.<\/p>\n<p>While walking in the Austin neighborhood on the city&#8217;s West Side Monday, the man was confronted by 23-year-old\u00a0Shaquille Gales.<\/p>\n<p>Armed with a gun, Gales demanded the man&#8217;s property.\u00a0 However, quickly the tables turned.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not clear, exactly, how the concealed carrier was able to draw his own gun and get the drop on Gales, but he did.<\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old fired, hitting Gales in &#8220;the back of the head,&#8221; the police told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/ct-met-ccl-holder-fatally-shoots-robber-20180108-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-concealed-carrier-fatally-shoots-would-be-robber\" title=\"Chicago Concealed Carrier Fatally Shoots Would-be Robber\">Chicago Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gales was sent to the\u00a0West Suburban Medical Center in\u00a0<a id=\"CHIS0056\" title=\"Oak Park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/topic\/chicago-suburbs\/oak-park-CHIS0056-topic.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-concealed-carrier-fatally-shoots-would-be-robber\" title=\"Chicago Concealed Carrier Fatally Shoots Would-be Robber\">Oak Park<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0There, he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>CBS Chicago<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2018\/01\/09\/armed-robber-fatally-shot-by-intended-victim\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-concealed-carrier-fatally-shoots-would-be-robber\" title=\"Chicago Concealed Carrier Fatally Shoots Would-be Robber\"> is reporting<\/a> that Gales died from a &#8220;gunshot wound to the chest through his arm,&#8221; according to an autopsy performed Tuesday.\u00a0 Gales death was ruled a homicide.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/chicago-woman-shoots-attacker-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-concealed-carrier-fatally-shoots-would-be-robber\" title=\"Chicago Concealed Carrier Fatally Shoots Would-be Robber\">\u00a0Chicago Woman Shoots Attacker with His Own Gun<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Two things strike me about this story.\u00a0 The first is the underreporting.\u00a0 This seems like a big story but at the time of writing this, there is very little coverage from local media.\u00a0 Hopefully, that changes in the next few days.\u00a0 A story like this shouldn&#8217;t be relegated to a brief blurb on the web.<\/p>\n<p>Second, given the anti-gun politics of city and state leadership, it&#8217;s important to remind politicians in the Land of Lincoln how wrongheaded it is to infringe on the 2A rights of Illinoisans.\u00a0 Every chance we get, we need to let them know.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it this way.\u00a0 Illinois\u00a0was the last\u00a0state to lift its ban on concealed carry.\u00a0 State police have only been issuing concealed carry permits since 2014.\u00a0 Four years ago, that 58-year-old man would&#8217;ve been unable to defend himself in the manner he did Monday night.\u00a0 Who knows what would have happened to him had he been unarmed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 58-year-old fired, hitting Gales in &#8220;the back of the head,&#8221;
