Wisconsin state Democrats have proposed a new policy<\/a> that would require federally licensed firearm dealers to lock all guns in a secured safe or a steel gun cabinet or on a secured rod or cable when the business is closed or unattended.<\/p>\n

The bill\u2019s sponsor, Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, said this regulation will keep firearms from being stolen and becoming threats to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis common sense security measure will help keep our communities safe,\u201d Subeck said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWith gun violence on the rise and mass shootings becoming all too commonplace, this is a simple measure to keep firearms off our streets and out of the hands of those intent to do harm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Subeck references in her statement a recent firearm burglary in which a criminal drove his car through a window and got away with \u201cseveral firearms.\u201d She also mentions a high-profile incident<\/a> in which a man stole 18 firearms and two suppressors from a Wisconsin gun shop. He then sent an anti-government manifesto to President Trump, which sparked a 10-day manhunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was shocked by the ease with which these criminals were able to steal multiple unsecured firearms. As a result, these guns are now out on the streets posing a danger to the community,\u201d Subeck said. \u201cThe legislation I am introducing today will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on dangerous weapons by ensuring they are stored safely and securely after hours where they are sold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Subeck combines these two incidents with ATF statistics that indicate 7,488 firearms were burglarized in 2016. She does not mention that of those 7,488 firearms, only 44 were stolen from FFLs in Wisconsin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The problem, apparently, is somewhat less dire than Subeck would have her constituents believe.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time the Madison Democrat has advocated for stricter gun control measures. A brief scan of her Twitter feed<\/a> shows support for universal background checks, bump stock bans, and ending \u201cgun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
