Springfield Armory is updating their Saint series with a high-end modular rifle for hunting, self-defense and sport. The new gun is called the Edge<\/a> and it promises to be a standout in a crowded AR marketplace.<\/p>\n

Springfield is also giving away an Edge rifle<\/a> to one lucky winner to celebrate its launch.\u00a0 Make sure you sign up if you haven’t already.<\/p>\n

Building an AR is fun, but also intimidating for a lot of would-be shooters. The new Saint is designed to cater to people looking for a rifle a step up from a vanilla AR that also includes everything you need to get shooting.<\/p>\n

The Edge is chambered for .223 Remington\/5.56 NATO with a sleek and lightweight design. Even with its full-auto bolt carrier group, heavy buffer and extended handguard, the Edge weighs just 6 pounds unloaded.<\/p>\n

Springfield took their time developing the Edge and used forward-leaning components to build a very modern carbine. To be clear, the Edge isn’t just an AR with a light handguard.<\/p>\n

The Edge pairs a standard forged upper receiver for durability with a skeletonized billet lower receiver which saves weight and packs in features. In addition to sporting a short-throw ambidextrous safety selector, the receiver has dual integral quick-detach sling points and an enlarged, enhanced magwell. The magwell is also textured to use as a foregrip and sweeps into the lower’s oversized trigger guard.<\/p>\n

Both receivers are constructed from 7075 T6 alloy aluminum with a standard Type III anodized finish. The steel components have a Melonite nitride finish including the fire control group, bolt carrier group and barrel.<\/p>\n

The Edge has a standard 16-inch barrel with a mid-length gas system. This helps improve reliability by reducing the amount of gas pressure used to cycle the action. And to make sure that the Edge runs great in any conditions, the rifle has an adjustable, pinned low-profile gas block.<\/p>\n

The Edge has a free-floating full-length handguard with a 12-o’clock Picatinny rail and M-LOK slots for add-ons. The handguard features locking tabs to prevent rotation without torquing down on the barrel assembly. This helps preserve accuracy even as the barrel heats and expands.<\/p>\n

In addition to the custom handguard, Springfield designed their own enlarged charging handle, adjustable low-profile folding backup sights and large, squared-off muzzle device. The fire control group is also an in-house design. Every Edge has a match-grade, short-reset, single-stage trigger.<\/p>\n

Springfield isn’t above tapping outside manufacturers for components. Other accessories include a Bravo Company Mod 3 pistol grip, Mod 0 SOPMOD stock and a 30-round Magpul Gen M3 PMag where available.<\/p>\n

Considering that the rifle carries a $1,299 MSRP Springfield priced the Edge smartly. Real-world prices should be much closer to $1,000 which is solid for a gun like this that’s good to go, right out of the box.<\/p>\n
