{"id":80557,"date":"2017-10-04T15:40:53","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T19:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=80557"},"modified":"2017-10-04T15:40:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T09:21:08","slug":"ny-times-op-ed-time-talk-taking-away-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ny-times-op-ed-time-talk-taking-away-guns\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Times Op-Ed: &#8216;It\u2019s time to talk about taking away guns&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time to talk about confiscation, at least according to\u00a0Andrew Rosenthal of the NY Times.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/04\/opinion\/vegas-gun-control-debate.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-times-op-ed-time-talk-taking-away-guns\" title=\"NY Times Op-Ed: 'It\u2019s time to talk about taking away guns'\">op-ed Wednesday<\/a>, Rosenthal wrote, &#8220;It\u2019s time to talk about taking away guns \u2014 not everyone\u2019s guns and not all of them, but a whole lot. I know I am inviting enormous vitriol with that sentence, but it has to be said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate Rosenthal&#8217;s honesty on the matter.\u00a0 I really do. Because too often gun control advocates stop short of telling us how they really feel about confiscation. Why do they stop short?\u00a0 Two reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First,\u00a0it&#8217;s a political nonstarter. Were the government to actively start going door to door to seize weapons from the American people we&#8217;d have a civil war on our hands.\u00a0 No one wants a civil war, especially the side with no guns.<\/p>\n<p>Second, it undermines the anti-gun lobby&#8217;s current long-term strategy which is to kill the 2A with a thousand cuts.\u00a0 To enact bills like universal background checks and No-Fly, No-Buy they need support from moderate gun owners.\u00a0 A surefire way to burn the trust of moderates would be openly calling for confiscation and civil disarmament, even though, as Rosenthal admits, that&#8217;s the end goal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no good reason for a civilian to own rifles like the ones used by the Las Vegas killer and even less to own many of them,&#8221; wrote Rosenthal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to steadily remove from private hands those kinds of guns, and ammunition designed to kill and maim more effectively or to pierce armor. Then we need to find more ways to reduce the number of weapons we own,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>I love his use of the pronoun &#8220;we.&#8221; I doubt Mr. Rosenthal owns any firearms.\u00a0 But if he does, by all means, sir, you&#8217;re free to hand them over.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not going to though.\u00a0 Because we <em>need<\/em> them.\u00a0 We need them to defend ourselves, our families, our property and our freedom from those that would take them all away.\u00a0 If that&#8217;s not clear enough, try this, I need my guns to keep people like you from trying to confiscate them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;It\u2019s time to talk about taking away guns \u2014 not everyone\u2019s guns and not all of them, but a whole lot.
