Oregon lawmakers want to put SB 719 up for a vote so citizens have the opportunity to repeal the law. Visit Repeal719.com<\/a> to help make it happen.<\/p><\/div>\n

A group of Oregon lawmakers launched a petition last week to repeal the state’s new confiscatory gun law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Signed by Gov. Kate Brown back in August, the bill — known as SB 719 <\/a>— gives \u00a0the government the ability to slap one with an “extreme risk protection order,” which is just a fancy way of saying “You have 24 hours to turn in your guns.”<\/p>\n

In an article published<\/a> in the Herald and News, state Rep. E. Werner Reschke explained the problems with the law.<\/p>\n

“SB 719 calls for the forced confiscation of property (guns) by the police with no due process, no conviction of a crime and no accusation of a crime,” he wrote. \u00a0“It allows anyone, including strangers off the street, to make assessments and a case before a judge.”<\/p>\n

How this all works is that a concerned citizen can ask a judge via the extreme risk protection order process to revoke another individual’s 2A rights. \u00a0If the judge agrees with the sworn testimony provided by the concerned citizen, that individual’s guns will be seized by police if he or she refuses to turn them in.<\/p>\n

At a later date, the individual can apply to have his or her Second Amendment rights restored. \u00a0Though ostensibly it may be well-intentioned, this whole charade opens up a big can of worms.<\/p>\n

“It allows judges, with no mental health credentials, to render judgment on another person\u2019s state of mind whom they have never met or spoken to,” Reschke continued. \u00a0“Furthermore, it actually forbids judges from considering assessments of the respondent\u2019s mental health by people who actually do have mental health credentials. The law even goes so far to allow a judge to confiscate every firearm in a household because one person in the household has a past DUI conviction.”<\/p>\n

Reschke and his friends in the House are now collecting signatures for a petition to put SB 719 on the 2018 Ballot so Oregonians can vote to nix this unconstitutional gun grab.<\/p>\n
