A 2015 Florida law known commonly as the \u201churricane gun law\u201d allows those taking part in a mandatory evacuation to carry a concealed firearm for 48 hours without a valid permit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When Florida Governor Rick Scott signed the law in 2015, Unified Sportsmen of Florida\u2019s Marion Hammer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2017\/09\/06\/floridas-hurricane-gun-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hurricane-gun-law-allows-irma-evacuees-carry-concealed-wo-permit\" title=\"'Hurricane Gun Law' Allows Irma Evacuees to Carry Concealed w\/o Permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">commented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cThis bill is a no-brainer, particularly in Florida with our hurricane exposure. When you\u2019re ordered to evacuate \u2014 to take your kids, your dog and valuables and flee \u2014 the last thing you should leave behind is your gun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gov. Scott can also extend the timeline to allow evacuees to carry concealed for a greater amount of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWith Hurricane Irma now a category 5 storm, we must do all we can to prepare our families and communities for any potential impact from this major weather event,\u201d Scott said in a statement. \u201cWe do not know the exact path of this storm, but weather can change in an instant and while we hope for the best, we must prepare for the worst.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Florida\u2019s expansion of Second Amendment rights comes in the wake of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/virgin-island-gov-signs-confiscation-order-ahead-hurricane-irma\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hurricane-gun-law-allows-irma-evacuees-carry-concealed-wo-permit\" title=\"'Hurricane Gun Law' Allows Irma Evacuees to Carry Concealed w\/o Permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">opposite response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the U.S. Virgin Islands, whose governor signed an order Monday instructing law enforcement personnel to confiscate firearms and ammunition from residents before the arrival of Hurricane Irma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In response, the National Rifle Association is threatening legal action if Gov. Kenneth Mapp refuses to reverse the order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople need the ability to protect themselves during times of natural disaster,\u201d said Chris W. Cox, executive director, NRA-ILA, in a press release. \u201cThis dangerous order violates the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens and puts their lives at risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NRA won a similar lawsuit in 2005 against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who tried to confiscate firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gov. Scott <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2017\/09\/06\/hurricane-irma-may-bring-significant-storm-surge-to-florida-governor-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hurricane-gun-law-allows-irma-evacuees-carry-concealed-wo-permit\" title=\"'Hurricane Gun Law' Allows Irma Evacuees to Carry Concealed w\/o Permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Wednesday that Irma remains a \u201cdangerous and life-threatening Category 5,\u201d and the National Weather Service called the storm \u201cpotentially catastrophic.\u201d A hurricane watch has been issued for south Florida, the Florida Keys, Lake Okeechobee, and Florida Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The governor urged Florida residents in these areas to \u201cget out quickly&#8221; if they\u2019re told to evacuate, adding that 25,000 people have already been evacuated from the Florida Keys. Mandatory evacuations have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridadisaster.org\/PublicMapping\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hurricane-gun-law-allows-irma-evacuees-carry-concealed-wo-permit\" title=\"'Hurricane Gun Law' Allows Irma Evacuees to Carry Concealed w\/o Permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">issued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> all along the Florida coast, including in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MiamiBeachPD\/status\/905575462868484096\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fus%2F2017%2F09%2F06%2Fhurricane-irma-may-bring-significant-storm-surge-to-florida-governor-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hurricane-gun-law-allows-irma-evacuees-carry-concealed-wo-permit\" title=\"'Hurricane Gun Law' Allows Irma Evacuees to Carry Concealed w\/o Permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Miami<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evacuees are fleeing to designated evacuation zones and refugee centers.
