Days after Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile, authorities have released the dashcam video from Officer Yanez\u2019s police cruiser. While millions have seen the aftermath of the shooting<\/a> in a video taken by Castile\u2019s girlfriend, this video provides the first public glimpse into the moments before the shooting as well the shooting itself.<\/p>\n

Jurors saw this video several times during the course of Yanez\u2019s trial, but until now it has not been shown outside the courtroom, according to a report from the New York Times<\/a>. The jury acquitted Yanez of both second-degree manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm.<\/p>\n

Yanez approaches Castile\u2019s vehicle and explains that he pulled Castile over due to a broken taillight, which can be seen in the video. During the trial, Yanez said that he also believed Castile to match the description of a robbery suspect from several days earlier.<\/p>\n

Yanez asks for Castile\u2019s license and insurance, and Castile hands Yanez a piece of paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me,\u201d Castile says as Yanez hands the paper back to Castile.<\/p>\n

At the word \u201cfirearm,\u201d Yanez\u2019s hand moves towards his pistol, and he says, \u201cOk, don\u2019t reach for it, though, don\u2019t pull it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Castile can be heard protesting, and he seems to say, \u201cI don\u2019t have to reach for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yanez repeats his instruction, \u201cDon\u2019t pull it out,\u201d as he draws his sidearm. Yanez told investigators<\/a> that he saw Castile \u201creaching down between his right leg, his right thigh area and the center console.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt appeared to me that he had no regard to what I was saying,\u201d Yanez continued, according to recently released transcripts of the investigation into the shooting. \u201cHe didn\u2019t care what I was saying. He still reached down. \u2026 And, at that point I, was scared and I was, in fear for my life and my partner\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the video, Yanez draws his firearm after repeating his instruction the second time and fires seven shots into the car.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t pull it out! Don\u2019t move!\u201d Yanez repeats.<\/p>\n

Yanez begins to become emotional immediately following the shooting. He yells \u201cfuck!\u201d several times, telling Castile\u2019s girlfriend, \u201cI told him not to reach for it! I told him to get his [unclear] open!\u201d<\/p>\n

Castile\u2019s girlfriend can be heard in the background taking her now-infamous Facebook live video <\/a>of the incident.<\/p>\n

Yanez keeps his handgun pointed at Castile until other officers arrive and begin to administer CPR on the street.<\/p>\n

At the end of the video, Yanez can be heard talking to the other officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had his grip a lot wider than a wallet, and I don\u2019t know where the gun was. He didn\u2019t tell me where the fuckin\u2019 gun was,\u201d Yanez said. \u201cHe was just staring straight ahead and I was gettin\u2019 fuckin\u2019 nervous and then I told him\u2026I know fuckin\u2019 I told him to get his fuckin\u2019 hand off his gun.\u201d<\/p>\n
