Also, the amount and variety of related portable gear has never been better.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming you carry at least a gun and a folding knife \u2014 and probably obvious items, such as a mobile phone, a wallet and keys \u2014 you might benefit from carrying a few more items with you. That\u2019s a lot of gear, yes, but a lot of usefulness goes with it. Here are my top five EDC essentials by product category. I actually carry more than this, but usually not less.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. If so, how many extra mags?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And not just any ammo but ammo I\u2019ve tested in my carry gun. Whether I\u2019m carrying an extra magazine or two or a speedloader or speed strip, in an altercation, it just makes sense to be prepared to go further than I think I\u2019ll need to.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, I carry spare ammunition in my weak-side front pocket or in a weak-side belt holster of some kind. If I\u2019m carrying an autoloading pistol, I carry at least one but sometimes two magazines; depends on the gun.<\/p>\n<p>With a revolver, I\u2019ll carry two speed strips or one speedloader. (Why not two speedloaders? I have no idea.) With reloads on my person, the load on my belt gets balanced out and I gain a bit more confidence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Pocket Tactical Light<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_75007\" style=\"width: 393px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-every-day-carry-essentials\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75007\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight-383x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" width=\"383\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight-383x300.jpg 383w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight-150x117.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight-768x601.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight-1024x801.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pocketcliplight.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Do you carry a small flashlight on you or simply rely on your smartphone?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tactical lights come in all shapes and sizes and plenty exist that are small enough for a pocket. The one I carry isn\u2019t the biggest or the brightest. In fact, it\u2019s relatively inexpensive, so if I lose it, no big deal.<\/p>\n<p>But there is such a thing as \u201cbright enough\u201d and \u201ctough enough\u201d \u2014 especially if it\u2019s handy enough that I\u2019ll take it with me wherever I go.<\/p>\n<p>I carry my small tactical light clipped to my weak-side front pocket or clipped to my belt where hardly anyone ever notices it. It takes a cheap, easy-to-find AA battery and has a simple tail switch.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Tactical Pen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_75018\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-every-day-carry-essentials\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75018\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen-300x300.png\" alt=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/shirtpockettacticalpen.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tactical pens are a last-ditch self-defense tool.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Residing in my shirt pocket is a tactical pen. Generally, the pen is made from an aluminum alloy and 99 percent of the time it gets used as a pen. But if I need a pointed impact weapon, it\u2019s there, ready for fast deployment.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, I\u2019ll carry the pen in my weak hand, just to have it at the ready if I sense a situation escalating and I\u2019m plotting an escape route. Of all the EDC gear I have the opportunity to use, a tactical pen easily gets close to being on my person all the time.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, I\u2019ve traveled by air twice this year with two different tactical pens in a carry-on bag. TSA never blinked. So, I can have at least some kind of self-defense tool if I\u2019m not traveling with a knife or a gun.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Multi-Pliers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_75004\" style=\"width: 324px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-every-day-carry-essentials\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75004\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool-314x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" width=\"314\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool-314x300.jpg 314w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool-150x143.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool-768x733.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool-1024x977.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/messengerbagtool.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More of a portable tool set than a weapon, multi-pliers can come in real handy for when something needs a quick fix.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These pocket toolboxes have undergone years of transformation and only get better. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be equipped with a myriad of useful tools. When I pick a multi-tool, I couldn\u2019t care less about the type of knife, as the folding knife in my pocket handles virtually all the cutting duties. But I do pay attention to the other tools.<\/p>\n<p>Features I look for include pliers that are as near to needle-nose as I can get, and I also want a wire cutter built into those pliers. After that, I enjoy having a couple screwdrivers, a scraper or pry of some kind and a bottle opener. \u00a0I prefer the multi-tools that open one-handed and have tools that lock in place.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-pliers get carried in my messenger bag or in my vehicle. I\u2019m not too keen on carrying them in a pocket \u2014 too heavy and clunky \u2014 nor on my belt in a sheath \u2014 too much hanging on my belt already. But they are always within fairly easy reach no matter where I am. (They\u2019re more of a fix-it kind of tool than a self-defense tool anyway.)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Backup Knife<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_75008\" style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"top-five-every-day-carry-essentials\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75008\" title=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" class=\" wp-image-75008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"Top Five Every Day Carry Essentials\" width=\"209\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife-768x1080.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife-728x1024.jpg 728w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/gerberankleknife.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fixed blade, perfect for ankle carry.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another reason I don\u2019t care a whole lot about what kind of knife my multi-tool has is because I also carry a backup knife. This will be a light duty, lightweight knife that (for me) will be a fixed blade. Folding is fine, but for a backup, fixed is better.<\/p>\n<p>You might find a backup knife in my messenger bag or sometimes on my person \u2014 on my belt or carried in an ankle holster.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those pieces of gear that, if seen, causes people to look at me with a quizzical look. You know the one: \u201cWhy do you carry that? You\u2019ve already got a gun\u2026\u201d So, I keep it concealed.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Other gear I carry regularly but not every day includes a length of paracord, duct tape, a space blanket, a first-aid kit, a keychain light and a carabiner. I could get into the outerwear I keep handy for weather emergencies and then get into bug-out gear, but that\u2019s not every day stuff. Watch for an article on that stuff later.
