{"id":74711,"date":"2017-06-08T12:24:18","date_gmt":"2017-06-08T16:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=74711"},"modified":"2017-06-08T12:24:18","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T06:22:07","slug":"michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan House Approves Constitutional Carry Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Will Michigan become the next state to approve Constitutional carry legislation?<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have to ultimately wait and see but so far things are moving in the right direction as the state House this week approved\u00a0HB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(yvzbgo225cwt2shcalz5lega))\/mileg.aspx?page=BillStatus&amp;objectname=2017-HB-4419\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill\" title=\"Michigan House Approves Constitutional Carry Bill\">4416<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(mt2upatuv2o5xzt0hpfxmkn4))\/mileg.aspx?page=getobject&amp;objectname=2017-HB-4416\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill\" title=\"Michigan House Approves Constitutional Carry Bill\">4419<\/a>, which would make the following changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.<\/li>\n<li>Remove open and concealed carry from laws that restrict one from carrying dangerous weapons.<\/li>\n<li>Allow security guards to carry concealed when they&#8217;re off duty. \u00a0Currently, they can only carry while on duty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bills passed along a mostly party-line vote Wednesday,\u00a059-49. \u00a0During the debate on the floor, Republicans pointed out that there is no permit requirement for open carry in Michigan so it makes little sense to have one for concealed carry. \u00a0They also argued that the 13 states that have enacted permitless carry haven&#8217;t descended into chaos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people\u2019s Republic of Vermont, Bernie Sanders-ville has had this for years and it\u2019s not a hotbed of gun violence,\u201d said state Rep. Gary Glenn (R-Midland), according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/2017\/06\/07\/no-permit-training-needed-concealed-carry-guns-passed-house\/378659001\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill\" title=\"Michigan House Approves Constitutional Carry Bill\">Detroit Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, on the other hand, claimed that the new laws would make a cop&#8217;s job more difficult and do nothing to improve the safety of communities around the Great Lake State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is dangerous for our law enforcement and families. As a law abiding gun owner, I honor and respect the second amendment,\u201d said state Rep. Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township). \u201cExpanding concealed carry while removing training requirement is not sensible, dangerous and it\u2019s not good for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bills now head to the Senate for consideration. \u00a0Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof (R-West Olive) said that there is no timeline for the chamber to review the bill. \u00a0Hopefully, it&#8217;s sooner rather than later. \u00a0We&#8217;ll keep you posted.<\/p>\n<p>In other Michigan-related news, Democratic lawmakers in the House introduced an &#8220;Extreme Risk Protection Order&#8221; bill this week that would allow judges to strip an individual of his or her 2A rights if law enforcement or family members present evidence that the individual is a threat to himself\/herself or others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is about public safety. If someone has made threats of violence or suicide, it only makes sense to take those threats seriously,\u201d State Rep. Robert Wittenberg (D-Oak Park) said in a<a href=\"https:\/\/housedems.com\/article\/rep-wittenberg-introduces-extreme-risk-protection-order-reduce-gun-violence-protect-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-house-approves-constitutional-carry-bill\" title=\"Michigan House Approves Constitutional Carry Bill\"> press release<\/a>. \u201cBy following a court process to only temporarily limit access to guns for these individuals, we can better protect our families and communities.
