Shannon Watts recently slammed Texas\u00a0Gov. Greg\u00a0Abbott for a\u00a0joke\u00a0he\u00a0made\u00a0about\u00a0firearms and reporters shortly after he signed a bill lowering concealed carry permits fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America sounded off following the Republican governor’s remark while at a shooting range last week in which he said, “I\u2019m gonna carry this [gun] around in case I see any reporters,” according to Patrick Svitek of The Texas Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Abbott’s joke was in reference to an incident involving a\u00a0Montana state lawmaker who was charged with misdemeanor assault <\/a>after getting physical with a reporter from The Guardian.<\/p>\n

Watts said that Abbott’s comment was “unacceptable and that “gun violence is no laughing matter.”<\/p>\n

“Governor Abbott’s so-called joke about shooting reporters is unacceptable, but it’s not surprising coming from one of the NRA leadership\u2019s favorites,” she said in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n

“We have a President who boasted he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose supporters, and received $30 million dollars in campaign support from the gun lobby,” she continued. “What these politicians need to understand is that gun violence is no laughing matter \u2013 more than 90 Americans are shot and killed every day and hundreds more are injured. Joking about shooting anyone is unacceptable, and we must demand more from elected leaders who make our laws.<\/p>\n

“Rather than flippant comments that could incite violence, they should talk to the victims of gun violence and their families who \u2013 along with the vast majority of Americans\u2014support common sense gun laws that will save lives,” she concluded.<\/p>\n

The idea that a politician can’t or shouldn’t joke about this subject or that subject is absurd. \u00a0Because, if that’s the case, where does one draw the line?<\/p>\n

I mean, what would the Left do with its precious Al Franken, who once joked about al-Qaeda\u00a0killing <\/a>President Bush?<\/p>\n

We are constantly asking our leaders to be more “authentic” and “real” but the second they let their hair down we\u00a0pounce on them. \u00a0We become outraged that they stepped out of their lane.<\/p>\n

I think humor gives us insight into a candidate’s character. \u00a0I want my politicians to have a bit of a funny bone because not only does it put their humanity on display but I’m a firm believer, as Michael J. Fox once said, “The scariest person in the world is the one with no sense of humor.”<\/p>\n
