{"id":74071,"date":"2017-05-23T10:56:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-23T14:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=74071"},"modified":"2017-05-23T10:56:13","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T23:46:12","slug":"130-authors-join-everytown-council-pledge-to-push-anti-gun-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/130-authors-join-everytown-council-pledge-to-push-anti-gun-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_74112\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jodi-picoult-photo-2016.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"130-authors-join-everytown-council-pledge-to-push-anti-gun-agenda\" title=\"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74112\" title=\"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jodi-picoult-photo-2016-300x300.png\" alt=\"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jodi-picoult-photo-2016.png 300w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jodi-picoult-photo-2016-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-74112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Author Jodi Picoult, a founding member of the Everytown Authors Council.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Everytown for Gun Safety announced this month the launch of its &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/everytown.org\/authors-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"130-authors-join-everytown-council-pledge-to-push-anti-gun-agenda\" title=\"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda\">Authors Council<\/a>,&#8221; a group of more than 130 authors, illustrators, editors and agents who have signed on to push an anti-gun agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the loveliest perks of being an author is knowing that you have an audience of readers who actually want to hear what you have to say, and who trust you to take them on a journey \u2013 no matter where it might be \u2013 to learn, inspire and feel deeply,\u201d said Jodi Picoult, a founding member of the Everytown Authors Council, in press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is because of this that authors are singularly suited to speak out on the need for common-sense gun laws, and to tell the stories of those who have been devastated by gun violence in this country,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Our job as writers is to get people to engage and to start talking \u2013 and this is a conversation we as a nation badly need to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Authors Council first order of business will take place at the end of the month when it will begin encouraging members and their followers to &#8220;#WearOrange&#8221; for National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>Those who wear orange will be entered into a drawing for an autographed book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat writing has the power to move and inspire \u2013 and it\u2019s inspiring, too, to hear such a celebrated group of storytellers lending their voices to the growing chorus for gun safety,\u201d said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe talent and reach of this Council will get even more Americans thinking, talking, and taking action, all toward our shared goal \u2013 saving lives from gun violence,&#8221; added Feinblatt.<\/p>\n<p>Everytown, which is bankrolled by billionaire media magnate Michael Bloomberg, seems to be making real strides in its attempt to recruit power brokers from all corners of the cultural milieu.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll recall that a few years ago it launched the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/everytown.org\/creative-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"130-authors-join-everytown-council-pledge-to-push-anti-gun-agenda\" title=\"130 Authors Join Everytown Council, Pledge to Push Anti-Gun Agenda\">Creative Council<\/a>,&#8221; a group packed with Hollywood A-listers, e.g. Jennifer Aniston, JJ Abrams, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges.<\/p>\n<p>While the effect of recruiting all these cultural influencers remains to be seen, it&#8217;s tough to tell how much they move the needle on the legislative front, if at all, one can&#8217;t see how it is a good thing for the health and well-being the 2A long term. To that end, the nation&#8217;s gun lobby issued the following piece of advice:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One would hope that shameless shilling on behalf of a statist billionaire would be derided in any artistic community.
