Maloney (D-NY)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/bill-would-force-gun-dealers-to-sell-smart-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-dem-introduces-bill-require-smart-gun-technology-5-years\" title=\"Congresswoman Introduces Bill to Require Only Smart Gun Technology in 5 Years\"> reintroduced a bill <\/a>that would\u00a0mandate the adoption of smart gun technology within five years for all newly\u00a0manufactured handguns, and within 10 years for all handguns. \u00a0That&#8217;s right, the bill calls for retrofitting the millions and millions and millions of traditional handguns currently in circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/2380?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22carolyn+b+maloney%22%5D%7D&amp;r=2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-dem-introduces-bill-require-smart-gun-technology-5-years\" title=\"Congresswoman Introduces Bill to Require Only Smart Gun Technology in 5 Years\">The Handgun Trigger Safety Act<\/a>, the bill would do all of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Authorize grants to develop and improve \u201cpersonalized\u201d handgun technology to increase efficacy and decrease costs;<\/li>\n<li>Mandate that within five years of enactment all newly manufactured handguns must be personalized, ensuring that they can only be operated by authorized users;<\/li>\n<li>Mandate that within ten years of enactment anyone selling a handgun must retrofit it with personalization technology before that sale can be completed; and<\/li>\n<li>Provide reimbursement to manufacturers for the costs of retrofitting handguns through the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cHow many more kids have to die? How many more police officers have to be killed with their own weapon before we come to our senses?\u201d said Rep. Maloney in a <a href=\"https:\/\/maloney.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/rep-maloney-introduces-legislation-to-reduce-gun-deaths-make-guns-safer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-dem-introduces-bill-require-smart-gun-technology-5-years\" title=\"Congresswoman Introduces Bill to Require Only Smart Gun Technology in 5 Years\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t drive in cars or use baby cribs that didn\u2019t adopt the latest safety technology, and we shouldn\u2019t use guns that don\u2019t take advantage of this technology either,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;I\u2019m proud to reintroduce the Handgun Trigger Safety Act to support the development and adoption of innovative safety technology for handguns. Ed Markey (D-MA) plans to introduce a companion version in the Senate in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, this legislation has drawn sharp criticism from pro-gun organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More baloney from Maloney,&#8221; said Alan Gottlieb, the Executive Vice President of the<br \/>\nSecond Amendment Foundation, in an email to GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her real goal is to mandate guns out of existence,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We have seen this tried by anti-Second Amendment<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/news\/2016\/08\/25\/smart-guns-christie-veto\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-dem-introduces-bill-require-smart-gun-technology-5-years\" title=\"Congresswoman Introduces Bill to Require Only Smart Gun Technology in 5 Years\"> politicians in New Jersey<\/a>. Now they want to take it national. The free marketplace should decide what kind of firearms people will buy.
