(<em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/billingsgazette.com\/news\/government-and-politics\/zinke-rides-a-horse-to-work-on-his-first-day\/article_5455d17a-a4c0-54e6-808e-0057bb34dbc3.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">AP<\/a><\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last month, Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke reversed former President Obama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/obamas-parting-shot-gun-industry-banning-lead-ammo\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">last-minute ban<\/a> on the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle on federal lands.<\/p>\n<p>The reversal marked one of Zinke\u2019s first moves in office, and gun rights groups are hopeful his decision is only the first in a long line of pro-gun, pro-hunter federal actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecretary Zinke\u2019s rapid response to the previous administration\u2019s parting shot on hunters, target shooters and anglers demonstrates the true friend and common sense solutions we can expect from the Department of the Interior,\u201d said Lawrence G. Keane, the National Shootings Sports Foundation senior vice president and general counsel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing of the traditional ammunition ban on federal lands tells you everything you need to know about the decision. Likewise, the decisive action by Secretary Zinke tells you what you need to know and what we can expect from an Interior Secretary who himself is a hunter, angler and outdoor sportsman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zinke\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/sites\/doi.gov\/files\/uploads\/order_no._3346.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">order<\/a> does not to mention the environmental (non)effects of lead ammunition and fishing tackle. Instead, he justifies his decision on the basis that the previous administration conducted no \u201csignificant communication, consultation, or coordination with affected stakeholders\u201d before implementing the ban.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, neither President Obama nor the previous Secretary of the Interior consulted sportsmen before making a decision that would affect millions of sportsmen nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Zinke plans to take a much different attitude.<\/p>\n<p>During his confirmation hearing, he told senators in the Natural Resources Committee that for too long Washington, D.C., implemented policy changes without input from states or local authorities and often without regard to the consequences of those changes.<\/p>\n<p>Since arriving in Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNNPolitics\/status\/837505315591622656\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">on horseback<\/a>, Zinke has made a number of moves that reinforce his commitment to listening and responding to hunters and fisherman.<\/p>\n<p>In another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/sites\/doi.gov\/files\/uploads\/order_no._3347.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">order<\/a>, Zinke instructs the Department of the Interior to seek recommendations from the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council and the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council for expanding and enhancing hunting and fishing opportunities on federal public land.<\/p>\n<p>Zinke also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfieldsuntimes.com\/business\/article_266e67c2-0373-11e7-bf5b-b3d0e25287fb.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">announced<\/a> he will appoint to his senior staff a person whose sole responsibility will be to handle sportsmen\u2019s issues.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"he%20would%20appoint%20a%20senior%20political%20appointee%20who%20will%20handle%20sportsmen\u2019s%20issues%20on%20the%20Secretary\u2019s%20senior%20staff.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"interior-secretary-reverses-obamas-lead-ammo-ban\" title=\"Interior Secretary Reverses Obama\u2019s Lead Ammo Ban\">statement<\/a>, Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall said Zinke\u2019s early actions prove that sportsmen (and women) will once again have a voice in the Department of the Interior:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProviding places for all Americans to hunt, fish, and recreate is vitally important,\u201d said Hall, who was present for the order signings, \u201cas hunters and anglers are North America\u2019s greatest conservationists. I want to thank Secretary Zinke for his strong commitment and look forward to working with him in his new capacity at the Department of the
