An LGBT rights group known as \u201cGays Against Guns\u201d released an ad campaign Thursday targeting the national concealed carry reciprocity bill making its way through Congress.<\/p>\n

Titled \u201cReciprocity is an Atrocity,\u201d the ad warns its viewers that H.R. 38<\/a> and S. 446<\/a> — which allow concealed carry nationwide — will \u201coverturn your state\u2019s gun laws.\u201d The bills will also allow \u201cguns to travel freely across state lines,\u201d permitting someone to \u201cbuy a gun in Texas and bring it to a school in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ad ends with a series of protesters holding signs that read \u201cNot in my City\u201d and \u201cNot in my Nightclub,\u201d among other locations. People in white clothes stand in the background, representing those who have been killed in gun-related incidents.<\/p>\n

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017<\/a> unifies the patchwork of concealed carry laws across the nation. Under this legislation, if a person is allowed to carry a concealed firearm in his or her state of residence, that person is also permitted to carry a firearm in another state that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms.<\/p>\n

The legislation is designed to protect individuals who cross state lines and unintentionally break that state\u2019s concealed carry laws.<\/p>\n

Kevin Gotkin, a member of Gays Against Guns, said in a statement that the proposals are \u201cthe opposite of common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey undermine the safety established in places like New York City, where legislators have worked hard to protect us from gun deaths,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The National Rifle Association\u2019s Institute for Legislative Action notes that the new law does not override state laws that govern time, place, or manner of carriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividual state gun laws would still be respected,\u201d they said in an alert on February 21. \u201cIf under federal law a person is prohibited from carrying a firearm, they will continue to be prohibited from doing so under this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legislation will also not affect current laws governing the purchase of firearms. Unless a person is a resident of Texas, that person cannot, as Gays Against Guns claims, buy a gun in Texas and take it to a school in New York.<\/p>\n

The bill\u2019s sponsor in the House, Rep. Richard Hudson, R-North Carolina, calls the bill, \u201ca common sense solution to a problem too many Americans face.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Second Amendment right doesn\u2019t disappear when we cross state lines, and this legislation guarantees that,\u201d he said in a Jan. 4 statement. \u201cThis will provide law-abiding citizens the right to conceal carry and travel freely between states without worrying about conflicting state codes or onerous civil suits.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
