{"id":71689,"date":"2017-03-16T11:41:49","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T15:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=71689"},"modified":"2017-03-16T11:41:49","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T20:10:22","slug":"american-guns-star-convicted-tax-evasion-selling-firearms-without-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/american-guns-star-convicted-tax-evasion-selling-firearms-without-license\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;American Guns&#8217; Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_71690\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Wyatt.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"american-guns-star-convicted-tax-evasion-selling-firearms-without-license\" title=\"'American Guns' Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71690\" title=\"'American Guns' Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Wyatt-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"'American Guns' Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Wyatt-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Wyatt-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Wyatt.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-71690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Wyatt, former star of &#8220;American Guns.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Discovery Channel has had poor luck in recent years picking stars for its gun-related reality television shows.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month a judge ruled that \u201cSons of Guns\u201d star Will Hayden will be facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/jury-will-hear-multiple-sexual-assault-allegations-sons-guns-star-will-hayden\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"american-guns-star-convicted-tax-evasion-selling-firearms-without-license\" title=\"'American Guns' Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License\">multiple sexual assault allegations<\/a> in his upcoming trial.<\/p>\n<p>Now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2017\/03\/10\/american-guns-reality-tv-show-richard-wyatt-convicted\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"american-guns-star-convicted-tax-evasion-selling-firearms-without-license\" title=\"'American Guns' Star Convicted of Tax evasion, Selling Firearms Without a License\">Denver Post<\/a> is reporting that Richard Wyatt, the star of a different Discovery Channel show called \u201cAmerican Guns,\u201d has been convicted of 10 felony counts, including tax evasion and selling firearms without a license.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt could face up to 15 years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty of failing to report $1.1 million in income to the IRS and dealing firearms under a straw license through another gun store.<\/p>\n<p>The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives forced Wyatt to relinquish his Federal Firearms License in 2009 after he violated \u201cserious licensing rules,\u201d according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>But Wyatt continued to sell guns through another local gun shop called Triggers. Customers would choose their firearm at Wyatt\u2019s store and travel to Triggers to complete a criminal background check and to pick up their guns.<\/p>\n<p>When Triggers lost its FFL, Wyatt set up the same scheme through other local gun stores.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Wyatt\u2019s FFL status, he agreed in 2011 to a $500,000 contract with the Discovery Channel to star in \u201cAmerican Guns,\u201d a show that would document the goings-on at Gunsmoke, Wyatt\u2019s store. It isn\u2019t clear whether the television network knew Wyatt was not legally permitted to sell firearms.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, the show billed Gunsmoke as one of the finest gun shops in the world.<\/p>\n<p>ATF agents busted Wyatt after purchasing four guns from Gunsmoke on three occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt\u2019s tax situation wasn\u2019t much better. The Post reports that Wyatt failed to pay taxes in 2009 when he made $290,000; in 2010 when he made $123,000; and in 2012 when he made $689,000, according to a court records.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt\u2019s attorney, Mark Johnson, claimed that while his client was a poor bookkeeper, he never had any criminal intent. \u201cHis books were a disaster.
