{"id":70162,"date":"2017-02-14T09:22:04","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T14:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=70162"},"modified":"2017-02-14T09:22:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T18:21:45","slug":"fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear Mongering at Its Finest: NBC Reports on &#8216;Ghost Guns&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Ghost guns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great term for instilling fear in the uninformed: ghost guns are invisible, untraceable, and might be hiding under your bed! \u00a0Even as we speak, an entire army of ghost criminals are probably using their ghost guns to murder innocent puppies \u201call across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Rossen certainly seems to think so.<\/p>\n<p>Rossen is a \u201cnational investigative correspondent\u201d for NBC News, and he put together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/loophole-lets-criminals-buy-untraceable-ghost-guns-online-n719121\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns\" title=\"Fear Mongering at Its Finest: NBC Reports on 'Ghost Guns'\">report<\/a> on \u201cghost guns\u201d that, quite frankly, sounds more like a campfire story than a news report.<\/p>\n<p>He begins where all good anti-gun stories begin\u2014a \u201clegal loophole.\u201d He\u2019s talking about 80 percent completed AR-15 lowers, which do not require a background check to purchase but do require a fair amount of gunsmithing. They\u2019re often shipped without any holes for the trigger pins or space for the fire control group.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty percent lowers are common enough in the gun world, but Rossen describes them like some kind of secret black market product only used by criminals. These guns \u201ccan\u2019t be trace\u201d and are also \u201cuntraceable,\u201d Rossen panics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot trace this firearm,\u201d adds ATF agent Rick Vasquez, who assembles the rifle for the report.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s true these guns do not have serial numbers, they\u2019re hardly ever used for criminal purposes.<\/p>\n<p>We know this for two reasons. First, converting aluminum blocks into functional receivers requires a level of experience, time, and resources most criminals don\u2019t have. Seriously, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=convert+80+percent+lower\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns\" title=\"Fear Mongering at Its Finest: NBC Reports on 'Ghost Guns'\">these videos<\/a>. Converting an 80 percent lower requires special tools and special knowledge\u2014it\u2019s not something Joe Thug can or will do on the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Rossen conveniently ignores this point. He says it only takes Vasquez \u201ca couple hours\u201d to convert the receiver, and, according to the video, Vasquez accomplishes the task using a simple drill. Neither the written report nor the video describes the process Vasquez used to create his \u201cghost rifle,\u201d though this is the first question any unbiased journalist would have asked.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of bias, the most glaring hole in Rossen\u2019s report is his assertion that \u201cghost rifles\u201d are used in shootings \u201cacross the country, from Maryland to California.\u201d Rossen doesn\u2019t specify how many shootings, nor does he provide a link to the statistics he\u2019s using.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to the second reason we know most eighty percent receivers aren\u2019t used for criminal purposes. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2013\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013\/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement\/expanded-homicide\/expanded_homicide_data_table_8_murder_victims_by_weapon_2009-2013.xls\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns\" title=\"Fear Mongering at Its Finest: NBC Reports on 'Ghost Guns'\">actual statistics<\/a> from the FBI, there were over 12,000 homicides in 2013. Of those 12,000 homicides, a grand total of 285 were committed with rifles of any kind.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals don\u2019t use rifles because they\u2019re tough to hide. Murderers are much more likely to use handguns, which accounted for 5,782 of the homicides in 2013. Even the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/14\/sunday-review\/the-assault-weapon-myth.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fear-mongering-finest-nbc-reports-ghost-guns\" title=\"Fear Mongering at Its Finest: NBC Reports on 'Ghost Guns'\"> New York Times <\/a>admitted in 2014 that \u201cbig, scary military rifles don\u2019t kill the vast majority of the 11,000 Americans murdered with guns each year. Little handguns do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Rossen\u2019s hyperbolic rhetoric, \u201cghost guns\u201d don\u2019t represent a public safety concern. The vast majority are used by gunsmiths and hobbyists for legal purposes, and Rossen\u2019s fear mongering does nothing but harm the already-damaged reputation of the mainstream media (see another
