Those dads subsequently sell those \u201chigh-caliber\u201d handguns at gun shows to illegal gun runners. Those gun runners \u201cflood\u201d the streets of cities across the country with those \u201chigh-caliber\u201d handguns, and more people die because \u201chigh caliber\u201d handguns are more lethal than .22s.<\/p>\n<p>Sound plausible? I didn\u2019t think so either, but that\u2019s exactly the story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/2016\/12\/americas-obsession-powerful-handguns-rising-gunshot-lethality\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"bloomberg-website-blames-high-caliber-handguns-nonexistent-rise-gun-deaths\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\">The Trace<\/a> wants its readers to believe.<\/p>\n<p>The Trace\u2014an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/about-the-trace\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"bloomberg-website-blames-high-caliber-handguns-nonexistent-rise-gun-deaths\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\">independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan news organization<\/a>\u201d funded by the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund (ha!)\u2014ran an article this week linking the prevalence of 9mm and .45 caliber handguns to a supposed rise in firearm lethality.<\/p>\n<p>The article, titled, &#8220;America&#8217;s Obsession with Powerful Handguns is Giving Criminals Deadlier Tools,&#8221; contains a shocking amount of misdirection, so you have to cut through unnecessary descriptions of gunshot wounds and concealed carry law to get to the meat of their argument.<\/p>\n<p>It boils down to two sets of statistics.<\/p>\n<p>First, the authors cite a data set they \u201cobtained\u201d from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that indicates a rise in the number of 9mm and .45 caliber handguns recovered from crime scenes. The Trace doesn\u2019t reveal the locations of those crime scenes or the size of the data set. They also (conveniently) don\u2019t provide a link or PDF document to the data itself.<\/p>\n<p>They simply say that \u201cpolice\u201d have been recovering more \u201chigh caliber\u201d handguns over the past few years. The reader, apparently, is to assume these numbers come from police departments all across the country, but the article never actually specifies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66942\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"bloomberg-website-blames-high-caliber-handguns-nonexistent-rise-gun-deaths\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66942\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\" class=\"wp-image-66942 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns-1024x689.jpg\" alt=\"recoverdguns\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns-1024x689.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns-400x269.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/RecoverdGuns.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-66942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<em>Photo: The Trace<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But for the sake of argument let\u2019s say their data is legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Their next set of hard evidence is meant to convince readers that the increasing prevalence of \u201chigh caliber\u201d handguns is resulting in more lethal shootings (i.e., more people are dying from gunshot wounds than in previous years).<\/p>\n<p>The article cites two studies. The first was conducted at Denver Medical Center from 2000-2013 and found that the number people admitted to the emergency room for gunshots who died from their wounds increased by six percent every two years.<\/p>\n<p>The second study was conducted by the <em>Baltimore Sun <\/em>and found that one in three shooting victims now die in the city, up from one in four a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it. Based on this evidence cherry-picked from two random cities, The Trace wants its readers to believe that more people are dying from gunshot wounds, and middle-aged \u201csuburban dads\u201d with Glock 19\u2019s are to blame.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66941\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TopTenTraced.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"bloomberg-website-blames-high-caliber-handguns-nonexistent-rise-gun-deaths\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66941\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\" class=\"wp-image-66941 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TopTenTraced.jpg\" alt=\"toptentraced\" width=\"720\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TopTenTraced.jpg 720w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TopTenTraced-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TopTenTraced-400x268.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-66941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Large caliber weapons? Really? According to who? Seems to me that like they do with &#8220;assault weapons&#8221; and &#8220;high-capacity&#8221; magazines they&#8217;re they&#8217;re just making stuff up! (<em>Photo: The Trace<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s a statistic for the folks at The Trace: from 1993 to 2014, firearm-related homicides have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/10\/21\/gun-homicides-steady-after-decline-in-90s-suicide-rate-edges-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"bloomberg-website-blames-high-caliber-handguns-nonexistent-rise-gun-deaths\" title=\"Bloomberg Website Blames 'High-Caliber' Handguns for (Nonexistent) Rise in Gun Deaths\">dropped by more than half<\/a> (7 \u2013 3.4 per 100,000 people). That statistic truly describes the state of \u201cgun crime\u201d in the United States, but does it get even the briefest of mentions in The Trace\u2019s article? Nope.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-gun industry is grasping at straws. They know it; we know it.
