She\u2019s been talking about it for months, and she\u2019ll no doubt begin pushing Congress to pass it the moment she sets foot in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s just one problem: no one agrees with her.<\/p>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/196658\/support-assault-weapons-ban-record-low.aspx?g_source=Politics&amp;g_medium=newsfeed&amp;g_campaign=tiles\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"u-s-support-assault-weapon-ban-record-low\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\">Gallup poll<\/a> released last month shows that support for a new AWB is at an all-time low. Only 36 percent of respondents favored a ban, representing an eight percent drop in support from 2012 and a full 21 percent drop from when Gallup first started asking the question in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the percentage of people who oppose a ban has steadily risen. In 2000 only 39 percent of Americans were opposed to a ban. In 2011 that number had risen to 53 percent, and last month a full 61 percent of those polled said they were against an AWB.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65782\" style=\"width: 539px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup3.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"u-s-support-assault-weapon-ban-record-low\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65782\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup3.png\" alt=\"(Photo: Gallup)\" width=\"529\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup3.png 529w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup3-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup3-400x268.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<em>Photo: Gallup<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Surprisingly, opposition to an AWB has also increased among Democrats, the party that instituted the first ban in 1994 and has continued to push for an AWB in this election. In 1996, sixty-three percent of Democrats supported an AWB; today that number is down to 50 percent. This means that only half of Hillary Clinton\u2019s own party supports her push for a new ban on black rifles.<\/p>\n<p>Reading the poll summary, it\u2019s clear that Gallup doesn\u2019t know what to make of their findings. They wonder why, in an \u201cera of ongoing terrorist attacks and mass shootings,\u201d fewer and fewer Americans support banning semi-automatic rifles. They blame Republicans for stepping up their opposition to a ban, but that doesn\u2019t explain the increased opposition among Democrats. They also note a growing distrust of the federal government, which likely has something to do with the trend.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65781\" style=\"width: 524px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup1.png\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"u-s-support-assault-weapon-ban-record-low\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65781\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup1.png\" alt=\"(Photo: Gallup)\" width=\"514\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup1.png 514w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup1-150x89.png 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Gallup1-400x237.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<em>Photo: Gallup<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But they fail to mention two even more likely causes. The first is that the American people have realized an \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban wouldn\u2019t do anything to make the country safer. Even the New York Times, that bastion of anti-gun rhetoric, admitted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/22\/us\/shootings-gun-violence.html?smprod=nytcore-iphone&amp;smid=nytcore-iphone-share&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"u-s-support-assault-weapon-ban-record-low\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\">recent article<\/a> that \u201creviving a 1994 ban on assault weapons and ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds would have a minimal impact, at best, on gun violence.\u201d More people are killed every year with <a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2012\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2012\/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement\/expanded-homicide\/expanded_homicide_data_table_8_murder_victims_by_weapon_2008-2012.xls\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"u-s-support-assault-weapon-ban-record-low\" title=\"U.S. Support for 'Assault Weapons' Ban at Record Low\">hands and feet<\/a> than with rifles. Banning semiautomatic rifles would do virtually nothing to diminish gun-related violence.<\/p>\n<p>The second reason Americans oppose an AWB is precisely <em>because<\/em> we live in an era of terrorism and mass shootings. Whether it\u2019s true or not, people feel the country is growing more dangerous, and they want to be able to defend themselves.
