The Second Amendment is a civil right. Though it often gets lost in the firestorm of political rhetoric surrounding firearms, the Second Amendments helps protect the weakest in society from being harmed by the strongest. It levels the playing field so that all have an equal ability to protect life, liberty, and property.<\/p>\n

Craig Noggle understood this better than most. He used his Second Amendment rights to fight off a would-be attacker last week, reminding his neighbors and community why the freedom to keep and bear arms deserves protecting and defending.<\/p>\n

Noggle, a 66-year old Army vet with a history of bad health, was in his home in Akron, OH., when he told ABC 5<\/a> he heard a knock on his door. He found his neighbor, Daniel Givens, standing on his porch. Noggle said he had had previous run-ins with Givens, telling the much younger man to slow down on the street and challenging him for peering into the homes of neighbors.<\/p>\n

When Givens refused to go away, Noggle gave him fair warning.<\/p>\n

“You try to come in through this door, I’m gonna shoot you,” Noggle said he told his neighbor. “He said, “Yeah, where’s the gun?’ and I picked it up. I said, ‘This is the gun and you’re gonna get shot.'”<\/p>\n

Ignoring Noggle\u2019s warning, Givens proceeded to force the door open and wrestle Noggle to the ground.<\/p>\n

“I thought, ‘I’m an old guy. I got to face up to this. I’m just not going to be able, I don’t know if I can take this guy,'” Noggle said.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the Army vet was able to maintain control of his firearm and, after sustaining blows to his lower back and arm, shot Givens in the leg.<\/p>\n

Police found Givens at his home later that day. He\u2019s been charged with assault and aggravated burglary, though the true extent of the damage he caused may be far worse.<\/p>\n

ABC 5<\/a> reported last Thursday that, in a tragic turn of events, Noggle passed away as the result of injuries sustained in a car crash unrelated to the attempted break-in. Police say he drove off an interstate around 2 p.m. on October 13, went down an embankment, and landed on Brecksville Road. He died at a nearby hospital later that day.<\/p>\n

Police have yet to indicate whether his crash is the result of injuries inflicted by Givens or is tied to Noggle\u2019s history of bad health. He told ABC 5 that he survived three strokes and two heart attacks before his run-in with Givens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
