The easier it is for a community to acquire guns, the more violent that community becomes. Sounds reasonable, right? Wrong. It couldn\u2019t be farther from the truth.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/14544-presscdn-0-64.pagely.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Crime_2016_Preliminary_Analysis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-despite-relaxed-ccw-laws-crime-remains-at-its-lowest-point-in-a-generation\" title=\"New Study: Crime Remains at its 'lowest point in a generation'\">new study<\/a> conducted by NYU\u2019s Brennan Center for Justice found that nationwide crime is \u201cat the lowest point in a generation.\u201d While the murder rate is spiking in certain cities (mainly in anti-gun Chicago), crime, violence, and murder rates remain as low as they\u2019ve been in the last three decades. \u201cWarnings of a coming crime wave may be provocative,\u201d the report concludes, \u201cbut they are not supported by the evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anti-gunners are no doubt asking themselves, \u201cHow can this be? States across the nation have relaxed their gun laws! Why aren\u2019t we seeing huge spikes in crime?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good question. Despite (or, perhaps, because of) the federal government\u2019s constant threat of tighter firearm restrictions, states across the country <em>have<\/em> dramatically relaxed their gun control laws in the last three decades. It\u2019s tough to see sometimes, considering recent anti-gun decisions from federal courts and anti-gun legislation from states like California and Connecticut. Forty states have instituted a \u201cshall issue\u201d policy: as long as a resident completes a certain set of requirements, the state has no right to deny that person a permit to carry. Thirty of those states issue permits to both residents and non-residents. Some states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/texas-ag-sues-a-houston-county-to-allow-concealed-firearms-on-courthouse-premises\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-study-despite-relaxed-ccw-laws-crime-remains-at-its-lowest-point-in-a-generation\" title=\"New Study: Crime Remains at its 'lowest point in a generation'\">like Texas<\/a> are even prosecuting local governments for not adhering to the state\u2019s pro-gun policies.<\/p>\n<p>If the anti-gun narrative held water, crime should have spiked long ago. In fact, the opposite has happened. There are lots of theories. The most probable is some combination of better law enforcement and better laws. Another has to do with reforms in the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p>These theories are plausible, but here\u2019s another: as more and more Americans have made the decision to defend themselves with firearms, criminals have become increasingly wary of committing violent crimes. No studies have shown a direct correlation between relaxed gun laws and a decrease in crime, but it\u2019s worth thinking about.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, relaxed gun laws absolutely, without a doubt <em>do not<\/em> result in more crime.
