Brian <\/em>Snyde<em>\/United States Naval Special Warfare<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The federal government has settled its lawsuit against former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette (aka &#8220;Mark Owen&#8221;), a participant in the SEAL Team Six raid that killed Osama bin Laden and author of the book <em>No Easy Day <\/em>that described his experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department is dropping the charges that Bissonnett\u2019s book revealed classified information, but they are still exacting over $6.6 million from the author for his failure to secure the Pentagon\u2019s approval before publishing his book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the initial accusations of me leaking all that classified stuff\u2026 they found nothing,\u201d Bissonnette told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/08\/19\/pentagon-drops-claim-against-navy-seal-that-he-spilled-bin-laden-secrets.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"feds-seize-6-6-million-seal-book-detailing-bin-laden-raid\" title=\"Feds Seize $6.6 Million from SEAL over Book Detailing bin Laden Raid\"><em>The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThey were just upset with me and wanted to get me one way or another. For four years, they looked into every little thing. Now\u2026 one signature and it all goes away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the dog that didn\u2019t bark,\u201d Bissonnette\u2019s Washington, D.C.-based litigator,\u00a0Robert Luskin, confirmed to <em>The Daily Beast<\/em>. \u201cWhen they heard him out and they made an extensive review of what they thought might be classified, I think they decided the right result was to walk away from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Bissonnette will be still be required to forfeit all past and future proceeds from his book for his failure get the Pentagon\u2019s signature before publishing potentially sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>Bissonnette claims to have received advice from former Army lawyer Kevin Podlaski, who, after reading Bissonnette\u2019s manuscript, said he did not need to seek pre-approval from the Pentagon. Podlaski and his lawyers have denied these claims, and Bissonette\u2019s Dallas-based malpractice lawyer Randy Johnston said he expects to sue Podlaski next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the advice I got\u2014that I did not need to submit the book for pre-publication review\u2014was wrong,\u201d Bissonnette wrote in his statement. \u201cI acknowledge my mistake and have paid a stiff price\u2014personally and financially, for that error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the hefty fines, the Justice Department was quick to acknowledge Bissonnette\u2019s service: \u201cThis enforcement action does not discredit Mr. Bissonnette\u2019s military service,\u201d said Justice Department spokesman Nicole Navas.<\/p>\n<p>It does, however, \u201creinforce that it is important for our service members&#8230; to protect classified information after leaving the U.S. military and government in an effort to protect our nation\u2019s national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Navas conveniently fails to mention that her employer wasn\u2019t able to find any information in Bissonnette\u2019s book that would have compromised national security. So while Bissonnette may have failed to secure the approval of the proper authorities, it isn\u2019t clear why such a hefty fine should be levied for a publication that revealed little more than the movie <em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em>, which describes the same operation in uncanny detail. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the advice I got\u2014that I did not
