{"id":61177,"date":"2016-07-25T17:25:11","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T21:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/?p=61177"},"modified":"2016-07-25T17:25:11","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T00:40:11","slug":"massachusetts-gun-owners-rally-opposition-copycat-gun-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/massachusetts-gun-owners-rally-opposition-copycat-gun-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Massachusetts Gun Owners Rally in Opposition to &#8216;Copycat&#8217; Gun Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Massachusetts attorney general Maura Healey went rogue, overstepping her authority as the state\u2019s chief law enforcement officer to announce a ban on so-called \u201ccopycat assault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This past Saturday, hundreds of gun owners from around The Bay State responded by gathering at the steps of the State House to express their ire at Healey\u2019s sudden decree.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If that woman was here right now, I might tar and feather her,&#8221; John Frye, of Tauton, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/news\/gunrights-activists-to-rally-at-mass-statehouse\/40849294\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"massachusetts-gun-owners-rally-opposition-copycat-gun-ban\" title=\"Massachusetts Gun Owners Rally in Opposition to 'Copycat' Gun Ban\">WCVB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a lot of confusion over what Healey\u2019s new interpretation of the law means for gun owners.<\/p>\n<p>GOAL, Gun Owners\u2019 Action League, a Massachusetts-based gun rights advocacy group, said in a news alert that Healey has \u201cessentially banned the possession, ownership, or transfer of ALL semi-automatic rifles that utilize a detachable magazine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, GOAL is working with a number of attorneys to figure out what recourse gun owners have to challenge Healey\u2019s prohibition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll leave that up to the experts we&#8217;re talking with. And I&#8217;m sure that, hopefully, with a week or so, we&#8217;ll make an announcement,&#8221; said Jim Wallace, GOAL\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, 58 state legislators sent a letter to Healey\u2019s office expressing \u201cstrong concern\u201d about her decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the last 18 years, the law has been implemented and enforced consistently, both by your office and your predecessors,\u201d states the <a href=\"https:\/\/14544-presscdn-0-64.pagely.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/FINALGunDirectiveLetterToAG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"massachusetts-gun-owners-rally-opposition-copycat-gun-ban\" title=\"Massachusetts Gun Owners Rally in Opposition to 'Copycat' Gun Ban\">letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour new directive, which has been presented by your office as nothing more than a closing of \u2018loophole\u2019 in the current law, appears in fact to be much more than that: the enforcement of a whole new law that unfairly infringes on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners in Massachusetts,\u201d the letter continues.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers conclude by iterating their objection to Healey\u2019s actions with the hope that she\u2019ll reconsider and rescind the Enforcement Notice.<\/p>\n<p>One shouldn\u2019t hold their breath. Thus far, Healey hasn\u2019t shown any remorse or regret for going rogue. However, her office has tried to set the record straight amongst all the panic and confusion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Claims that we are changing the law and taking guns away from law-abiding citizens are inaccurate and misinformed,&#8221; Jillian Fennimore, a spokeswoman for Healey, wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The road forward is\u00a0unclear. Surely there will be a legal challenge against the Enforcement Notice, but the fate of that challenge is uncertain. So, too, is the fate of any opposition in the Legislature.
