\nI’m not sure anyone has any faith in the free gun cable locks you get with most new firearms these days. The ones I have tested are a struggle to get the key into, and when you do get the key in and manage to open it the cable stubbornly clings to the side of the action. It is hard to get the gun from a safe and locked up condition to ready to fire.<\/p>\n

GunVault, who you probably know from their biometric handgun safes, has recently introduced two products that take the place of those pesky cable locks for not a lot of money. If you aren’t locking your gun in a safe and you feel you need to provide a foolproof measure to keep your gun safe from firing, one of these might be for you. Neither can be eliminated with a $5 pair of bolt cutters from Wal-Mart, and one is even on sale for a few days more for $13.95<\/p>\n

They are called AR-MagVault<\/a>, which is for AR-15 pattern rifles, and BreechVault<\/a>, for semi-auto and pump shotguns.<\/p>\n

Scrambling to get your gun unlocked at 2am after you hear a bump downstairs isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time, but plenty of people, especially new firearm owners who are still somewhat afraid of having a gun in the house, do indeed keep the gun always locked. Several states have yet unchallenged gun locking statutes as well, and some people just keep their guns always locked because they are afraid of breaking the law.<\/p>\n

The GunVault products are both hunter orange, making them easy to see in the dark, and unlike those cable locks that generally have a spinning keyhole cover, the keyhole on them is open and the key inserts very easily.<\/p>\n

The AR version inserts into your magazine well. The top part of the lock ensures that the gun is not in battery with a round in the chamber, and actually locks into the magazine release catch. When you lock it, the lock bar from the MagVault actually depresses your magazine release button. I can’t say I did due diligence to try to hammer the thing out of he STAG AR-15 I tested it on, but it is not something that is going to be done easily or without power tools, and you probably will destroy the gun in the process.<\/p>\n

The BreechVault shotgun version inserts sideways into the action of the gun through the ejection port and is a little more complicated. It can be used for several makes and models of shotgun and comes with different inserts for the various models. There are also some extra parts that are installed only on a few models. The BreechVault, like the MagVault, prevents the gun from going into battery, which completely disables the firearm.<\/p>\n

I installed the BreechVault on my Mossberg 590 M1, which is the gun that is issued to the US Army. Again, I didn’t hammer on it because I like my Mossberg the way it is, but that thing wasn’t coming out of there easy.<\/p>\n

For the purchase price of $24.95 for the AR MagVault and $19.95 for the BreechVault (currently on sale but back ordered on the website for $13.95), both of these products are no-brainers when compared to a regular cable lock. They were actually a fantastic idea and I think they have use outside the home even, for shooting matches where you leave your guns in a cart sometimes, and even for office\/workplace guns that aren’t supervised 100% of the time. We hope to review some of the biometric safes from GunVault at some point soon, but for now we figured we send this out while the sale was still going on.<\/p>\n
