When I hear the words \u201cMatt Damon\u201d two characters immediately come to mind, Jason Bourne from the Bourne series and \u201cMatt Damon\u201d from \u201cTeam America: World Police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Up until recently, well, until I read Damon\u2019s statements on gun control this week, I more often than not pictured Damon as the badass from Bourne.\u00a0 <\/span>Yeah, Matt Damon = Jason Bourne.\u00a0 <\/span>No one\u2019s cooler than Jason Bourne.\u00a0 <\/span>Right?\u00a0 <\/span>So tough!\u00a0 <\/span>So cool!\u00a0 <\/span>So badass!<\/p>\n

However, I\u2019m firmly changing my position on this.\u00a0 <\/span>From this day forward, when I hear \u201cMatt Damon,\u201d I will only think of the doltish puppet from \u201cTeam America: World Police.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The Bourne version of Damon is dead to me.\u00a0 <\/span>He is now, and forever, \u201cMatt Damon.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never seen \u201cTeam America: World Police\u201d then you\u2019re not going to get the import of what I\u2019m saying.\u00a0 For those of you unfamiliar with “Team America: World Police<\/span>,” I\u2019ve included a video from the movie below so you can at least get a little taste as to how the creators of the movie (the guys from “South Park”) chose to portray Damon (as an imbecile whose only way to communicate is to repeat his own name, kinda like Hodor from \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d<\/a>).\u00a0 <\/span>Needless to say, it\u2019s not all that flattering.<\/p>\n

Anyways, what did Damon say about gun control, you ask?\u00a0 <\/span>Ugh.\u00a0 <\/span>Basically, while promoting the new Bourne movie in the Land Down Under, he praised the Aussies for their national (mandatory) \u201cbuyback\u201d scheme that disarmed the vast majority of law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n

“You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t,” said Damon, in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald <\/a>while visiting Sydney.<\/p>\n

“People get so emotional that even when you make a suggestion about not selling AK47s to people on terror watch lists, that’s a non-starter. I don’t know what needs to happen,\u201d Damon continued.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cObviously mass shootings aren’t going to do it. There have been so many of them at this point. Sandy Hook, when those children were murdered, if that didn’t do it, you know, I just don’t know. Maybe we just need to evolve further before we can have that conversation, I don’t know,\u201d said the 45-year-old actor.<\/p>\n

I know what you\u2019re thinking,\u00a0Damon\u2019s a hypocrite.<\/em>\u00a0 And h<\/span>e is.\u00a0 <\/span>If Damon feels so passionately that the mere presence of firearms in a society are a root cause of violence then he ought not to take roles that showcase guns being used to kill people, whether that be good guys or bad guys.\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, he would never do that.\u00a0 <\/span>He has a classic Hollywood guns-for-me-but-not-for-thee mentality.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s okay when he pretends to shoot people on screen, but if you need a modern sporting rifle to defend your family against a group of thugs, well, tough luck.\u00a0 And t<\/span>he fact that you oppose laws that would ban many commonly owned and widely popular firearms, well, that makes you an \u201cemotional\u201d zealot, in the eyes of Damon.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d also go one step further and say that Damon is not only being a hypocrite but that he is also being ironic.\u00a0 <\/span>Think about it.\u00a0 <\/span>If I recall correctly, the Bourne series is about an extra-constitutional, dare I say \u201ctyrannical,\u201d government program.\u00a0 <\/span>Bourne was part of that rogue outfit before he was concussed and reawaken with a moral compass.\u00a0 <\/span>In the trilogy (or, however many movies there are) Bourne actively fights against that tyrannical agency with \u2014 wait for it \u2014 guns!\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 <\/span>He is using guns to keep the government in check or, at least, at bay!\u00a0 <\/span>Hmmm\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Isn\u2019t that why the founders included the 2A?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Now, here is where the irony kicks in with respect to his reference to No-Fly, No-Buy legislation.\u00a0 <\/span>Doesn\u2019t that agency have Bourne on a watchlist?\u00a0 <\/span>Isn\u2019t he considered a terrorist or an enemy of the state?\u00a0 <\/span>Isn\u2019t the government trying to keep guns out of his hands even though he is the good guy of the film?<\/p>\n

Presumably, the answers to all those questions are: yes! \u00a0This means that one of the fundamental lessons of the movie is that government cannot be trusted. \u00a0Moreover, that the government is bad. \u00a0Moreover, that giving the government — FBI, CIA, DHS, NSA — \u00a0the power to render judgement on who and who is not a terrorist and, by extension, who can and cannot own a firearm is a very dangerous proposition. \u00a0 Yet, Damon glibly defends a position on gun control that the Bourne series successfully undermines and subverts. \u00a0Ironic, isn’t it?<\/p>\n

Damon continued his praise of Australia, suggesting that gun control is the answer to stopping mass killings.<\/p>\n

“It’s wonderful what Australia did because you guys haven’t had a mass shooting since you went, ‘No, we’re going to be sensible about this.’ And nobody’s rights have been infringed, you guys are fine,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I wish we could be sensible like that but I don’t think that’s going to happen in my lifetime,” Damon concluded.<\/p>\n

Damon’s ignorance is off the charts. \u00a0There have been at least four shooting attacks<\/a> in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which triggered the nationwide mandatory “buyback” (those guns never belonged to the government, so the label “buyback” is a misnomer). \u00a0Additionally, comparing America to Australia is an apples-to-oranges comparison. \u00a0Australia is a rather culturally homogenous country with 23 million people. \u00a0America is a very diverse nation with 310 million people. \u00a0Big difference. \u00a0Lastly, the notion that the “buyback” system didn’t infringe upon anyone’s rights is a transparently stupid thing to say. \u00a0Australia’s gun laws \u00a0effectively remove one’s natural right to self-defense. \u00a0In terms of infringing on fundamental rights, it doesn’t get much worse than that.<\/p>\n

Long story short, I hope you join me in boycotting the new Bourne movie. \u00a0Screw Matt Damon aka “Matt Damon” (see video below)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
