Obviously the ready availability of weapons is a big issue, obviously Islamic fanaticism is a big issue&#8230;[and] the intolerance of those against different lifestyles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/clinton-on-confiscation-its-worth-considering\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"former-australian-prime-minister-finds-2a-perplexing\" title=\"Former Australian Prime Minister Finds 2A \u2018Perplexing\u2019\">Clinton on Confiscation: \u2018It\u2019s Worth Considering\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Howard was prime minister during the great Australian gun ban, when in 1996, following the mass killing at Port Arthur, Tasmania, he pushed a nationwide mandatory \u201cbuy back\u201d for all automatic and semi-automatic firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Howard\u2019s template for unilateral civil disarmament has become the gold standard for gun control advocates, including Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/clinton-on-confiscation-its-worth-considering\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"former-australian-prime-minister-finds-2a-perplexing\" title=\"Former Australian Prime Minister Finds 2A \u2018Perplexing\u2019\">said<\/a> at a Town Hall meeting in New Hampshire last year that the Australia model \u201cwould be worth considering doing it on the national level, if that could be arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sweeping prohibition has been hotly debated over the years. Gun-control advocates argue that it\u2019s led to a reduction in mass shootings.
