(<em>Photo: The Intercept<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\">In full disclosure, when he was alive, I interviewed Chris Kyle twice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once in person and once over email.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I never got the impression that he was lying to me in our conversation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He seemed about as honest and as straightforward an individual as I\u2019ve ever met.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">But after doing some research into Chris, it also became apparent that Chris was a bit of a jokester. He had a sense of humor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He liked to get a rise out of people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I think many SEALs are wired that way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They like to have a bit of fun with the public.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So did Chris stretch the truth from time to time to add to his \u201clegendary\u201d status (his nickname was \u201cThe Legend\u201d in the teams)?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wouldn\u2019t surprise me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Yet, not all lies are created equal. \u00a0Telling tall tales to joe public \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2013\/06\/03\/in-the-crosshairs\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chris-kyle-lie-military-record\" title=\"Did Navy SEAL Chris Kyle Lie About His Military Record?\">like sniping looters and armed agitators from atop the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina (killing as many as 30),\u00a0or gunning down two would-be carjackers in southwest Dallas with a Colt 1911, or maybe even punching Jesse Ventura in the face outside a bar in Coronado, CA<\/a> \u2014 is different than lying about one\u2019s military record.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Call it a hunch, but I don\u2019t believe Chris ever lied about his bravery in combat, his number of kills in action or his commitment to his brothers in the teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chris-kyle-lie-military-record\" title=\"Did Navy SEAL Chris Kyle Lie About His Military Record?\">report<\/a> by The Intercept calls Kyle\u2019s military record into question, saying in essence that he lied about the medals he received for his service.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This report prompted swift condemnation from many Chris Kyle supporters, including former Texas Gov. Rick Perry who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2016\/05\/30\/rick-perry-truth-about-american-sniper-chris-kyle.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chris-kyle-lie-military-record\" title=\"Did Navy SEAL Chris Kyle Lie About His Military Record?\">wrote an op-ed<\/a> for Fox News defending the deceased SEAL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe guiding premise of the article was that Chris Kyle, known to a grateful nation as its best-ever sniper in multiple combat zones, was a liar,\u201d wrote Perry. \u201cThe writer\u2019s assertion is that Kyle laid claim to more medals than the military had awarded him for his valor in combat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cAt issue was a disparity between Kyle\u2019s account in his book, \u2018American Sniper,\u2019 records obtained from a seemingly indifferent Navy through a Freedom of Information Act request and Kyle\u2019s official DD-214,\u201d continued Perry. \u201cThe first mentioned two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars, the Navy recalled one Silver Star and 3 Bronze Stars and the DD-214 credited him with TWO Silver Stars and SIX Bronze Stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIf there is any inaccuracy in Kyle\u2019s account it\u2019s that he didn\u2019t take ENOUGH credit for his awards,\u201d said Perry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Perry goes on to say that the \u201cDD-214\u201d also known as the \u201cCertificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty\u201d is the official and definitive \u201crecord of a person\u2019s time in the military, used to prove the authenticity, duration and character of said service.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, the Intercept\u2019s investigation is bunk as it ignores what is clearly stated in the DD-214.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Case closed?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Well, not really.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is still a discrepancy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In \u201cAmerican Sniper,\u201d Kyle only recounts two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars when, according to the DD-214, he had two silver Stars and SIX Bronze stars.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why did Kyle shortchange himself that sixth Bronze Star in his book?
