Here are three of the most significant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SB 1235 requires background checks to buy ammunition.<\/li>\n<li>SB 1446 bans the ownership of any ammunition clip that holds more than 10 rounds.<\/li>\n<li>SB 880 expands the legal definition of an &#8220;assault weapon&#8221; to include a group of rifles\u00a0with ammunition clips that can be quickly swapped out by using a bullet to push a small release button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expanding the legal definition of \u201cassault weapon\u201d in this way effectively bans all semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-sac-gun-bills-20160519-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-lawmakers-respond-san-bernardino-illogical-way-possible\" title=\"California Lawmakers Respond to San Bernardino in the Most Illogical Way Possible\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun violence has reached epidemic proportions across our nation,\u201d Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De Le\u00f3n told his fellow Senators. \u201cWe cannot stand by while our communities suffer from this horrific violence. These proposals take common sense steps to keep weapons and ammunition out of the hands of criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator De Le\u00f3n failed to explain how additional laws would keep guns out of the hands of people who, by definition, do not obey the law.<\/p>\n<p>He also failed to address the fact that the San Bernardino terrorists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/san-bernardino-guns-originally-bought-legally-later-modified-1449254384\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-lawmakers-respond-san-bernardino-illogical-way-possible\" title=\"California Lawmakers Respond to San Bernardino in the Most Illogical Way Possible\">bought their guns legally and later modified them<\/a>. None of the proposed measures outlaw gunsmithing tools, so it isn\u2019t clear how these new laws would keep terrorists from modifying future rifles in a similar fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The bills must now pass the Assembly, which, according to the Times, has traditionally stood up for gun rights more so than the Senate. Unfortunately for Californians, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said this week he is committed to pushing the measures through.<\/p>\n<p>The best hope for the pro-gun community in California may come from Gov. Jerry Brown, who, though a Democrat, has vetoed a number of anti-gun bills that he believed were overreaching.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/news\/california-senate-approves-sweeping-gun-control-measures\/1346168\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-lawmakers-respond-san-bernardino-illogical-way-possible\" title=\"California Lawmakers Respond to San Bernardino in the Most Illogical Way Possible\">ABC 7<\/a>, Gov. Brown vetoed the legislature\u2019s last attempt to expand the definition of an \u201cassault weapon\u201d because he felt it exceeded their rightful power. Gov. Brown is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article48414070.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-lawmakers-respond-san-bernardino-illogical-way-possible\" title=\"California Lawmakers Respond to San Bernardino in the Most Illogical Way Possible\">by no means friendly to the Second Amendment<\/a>, but he doesn\u2019t seem overly inclined to make California\u2019s strict gun laws much stricter.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-gun California legislators\u2014along with the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of California, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation\u2014voiced their disapproval of the measures but haven\u2019t been able to gain much traction in the legislature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California lawmakers have responded to the San Bernardino terrorist attacks in the only way they know how: by making it more difficult for law-abiding Californians to defend themselves against another attack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":54,"featured_media":57925,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_specdata_upc":"","_specdata_placement":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[244,7,25,593,240],"tags":[132,469,607,122],"featured":[],"hunt365":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-57923","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-2nd-amendment-r2kba","8":"category-gunsamerica-authors","9":"category-current-events","10":"category-jordan-michaels","11":"category-this-week","12":"tag-buzz","13":"tag-gun-control","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-r2kba"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
