They began fist fighting, and when the victim turned to enter the coffee shop, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him five times in the back. Another witness who spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.ctvnews.ca\/surveillance-video-shows-yonge-st-seconds-after-fatal-shooting-1.2859455\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"i-heard-a-man-being-murdered-and-no-one-could-do-anything-about-it\" title=\"I Heard A Man Being Murdered, And No One Could Do Anything About It\">CTV News Toronto<\/a> said that, before firing, the gunman said, \u201cYou owe us money. This is what happens when you mess with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police are still looking for the three suspects, who can be seen fleeing the scene in <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.ctvnews.ca\/surveillance-video-shows-yonge-st-seconds-after-fatal-shooting-1.2859455\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"i-heard-a-man-being-murdered-and-no-one-could-do-anything-about-it\" title=\"I Heard A Man Being Murdered, And No One Could Do Anything About It\">surveillance footage<\/a> from a restaurant across the street.<\/p>\n<p>I heard five shots ring out just before 8:00pm on Wednesday night. I didn\u2019t think much of it, as gunshots aren\u2019t common in this part of the city, and strange noises are a regrettable feature of daily life. But if I had bothered to get up and look down at the intersection\u2014one of Toronto\u2019s busiest\u2014I might have been able to see the pedestrians running for cover or the gunmen fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The reaction from Torontonians was predictable. Canada\u2019s largest city, like many cities in the U.S., strictly regulates the possession and use of firearms, and Canadians do not have a Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.<\/p>\n<p>This means that when I walk down the street, I have to rely on law enforcement to protect me from criminals with firearms. It\u2019s that simple.<\/p>\n<p>Another witness of the murder told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/they-shot-him-in-the-back-5-times-witness-says-of-yonge-st-shooting-victim-1.2858260\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"i-heard-a-man-being-murdered-and-no-one-could-do-anything-about-it\" title=\"I Heard A Man Being Murdered, And No One Could Do Anything About It\">CP24<\/a>, \u201cNobody tried to stop anybody [\u2026] nobody did anything. They just stood there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentiment here is better than \u201cblame the police!\u201d But no one is going to tackle a man with a gun unarmed, and Toronto\u2019s firearm regulations ensure that no law-abiding citizen was carrying a firearm at the time.<\/p>\n<h2>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/top-5-45s-home-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"i-heard-a-man-being-murdered-and-no-one-could-do-anything-about-it\" title=\"I Heard A Man Being Murdered, And No One Could Do Anything About It\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TOP 5 .45S FOR HOME DEFENSE<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The odds of someone with a gun stopping the murder were, admittedly, less than 100%. By all accounts, it happened in a fraction of a second, and the shots I heard were fired in rapid succession. But unless a police officer was also standing outside that Starbucks, there was a 100% chance Gabril Nikov was going to die.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals get guns\u2014no matter how strict the gun laws. We\u2019ve seen it time and again (Paris, San Bernardino, etc.), and I nearly witnessed it in person Wednesday night. What bothers me is that, without the right to bear arms, I\u2019m absolutely helpless. If someone points a gun at me or someone I love, there isn\u2019t anything I can do to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be moving back to the United States next week, and I can\u2019t wait to get back and reclaim the right to protect myself and my family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Author:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Jordan Michaels is a new convert to the gun world.
