The Ideal Conceal<\/a> pistol, aka “the iPhone Gun,” is a design that’s turning heads. The Ideal Conceal is a pistol that folds up into a rectangle about the shape and size of a cell phone, and is made to carry in any pocket safely and very discreetly.<\/p>\n

Despite it’s cutting edge lines, it’s a relatively simple pistol, a two-shot derringer chambered for .380 ACP. The grip portion folds over the trigger guard and trigger, preventing the gun from firing unintentionally when it’s in its cell phone disguise.<\/p>\n

Still in development, the Ideal Conceal won’t have conventional sights, instead, it has a built-in weaponlight and laser pointer for aiming. The simplicity of the design is expected to keep the price low–the Ideal Conceal has a projected MSRP of only $395.<\/p>\n

In the past few years, modern takes on\u00a0these pocket guns have proven that the concept is indeed timeless as concealed-carriers look for the ultimate mouse guns for deep concealment and backup. The Ideal Conceal neatly embodies the spirit of the 21st-century derringer.<\/p>\n

And while many people are getting excited for the Ideal Conceal, others are looking to restrict its sale. New York Senator Chuck Schumer (D) is asking the ATF to restrict sales of the Ideal Conceal by classifying it as a National Firearms Act-regulated AOW<\/a> or “Any Other Weapon.”<\/p>\n

Schumer, an outspoken advocate for increased gun control, slammed the Ideal Conceal, saying that “this iPhone gun is a disaster waiting to happen” in a statement Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Just like toys that too much look like handguns should not be sold, handguns that look too much like toys should not be sold,” he added.<\/p>\n

An AOW defines a broad spectrum of NFA-regulated firearms but in this case, Schumer is looking to have the Ideal Conceal to be restricted in the same way that wallet guns, cane guns, zip guns and pen guns are.<\/p>\n

Whether or not the ATF will declare that the Ideal Conceal is an AOW is another matter. One critical difference between wallet guns and other disguised firearms and the Ideal Conceal is that they are all made to shoot while disguised. The Ideal Conceal cannot be shot in cell phone mode, only when the pistol grip is extended.<\/p>\n

While the will have to weigh in on the issue when the Ideal Conceal is in production and ready for sale, it would be surprising if they classify it as an NFA-regulated AOW. At least one other example of a non-NFA-regulated pistol in disguise exists, the Braverman “Stinger” Pen Gun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although typically pen guns are considered AOWs the Stinger only functioned after being transformed into a pistol by folding down the grip. Because the Stinger bore the outward appearance of a handgun–odd looking as it was–it was not classified as an AOW.<\/p>\n

In “gun mode” the Ideal Conceal is hard to mistake as anything other than a pistol, and a sleek, contemporary one at that.<\/p>\n

If there’s one thing that isn’t surprising about this it’s that gun control advocates will not hesitate to use whatever tools they have at their disposal to make it harder for people to buy guns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
