(<em>Photo: KIRO7<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Self-defense shootings are not always cut-and-dry, and this case is a prime example.<\/p>\n<p>Min Kim, a Washington convenience store owner, has been charged with second-degree murder after prosecutors say he shot and killed a shoplifter who was attempting to flee.<\/p>\n<p>Kim has a different story. According to the account he gave <a href=\"https:\/\/q13fox.com\/2016\/03\/28\/i-was-really-afraid-clerk-claims-self-defense-facing-murder-charge-after-allegedly-shooting-killing-would-be-shoplifter\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"store-owner-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-after-shooting-would-be-robber\" title=\"Store Owner Charged with 2nd Degree Murder After Shooting Shoplifter\">Q13 Fox News<\/a>, the shoplifter\u201421-year-old Jakeel Mason\u2014was trying to steal cigarettes when he pushed Kim to the ground and tried to steal his gun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was keep reaching for my gun and I was really afraid,\u201d Kim said. \u201cI pulled my gun out and I shot him a couple times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors, however, say the surveillance footage captured the day of the incident contradicts the 30-year-old\u2019s version of events. According to charging papers acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article68806547.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"store-owner-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-after-shooting-would-be-robber\" title=\"Store Owner Charged with 2nd Degree Murder After Shooting Shoplifter\">The News Tribune<\/a>, Kim un-holstered his gun when he found Mason stealing cigarettes. Kim re-holstered his weapon but proceeded to \u201cpunched Mason in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both men started fighting, but Mason eventually freed himself and started for the door.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance video \u201cshows Kim positioned himself behind Mason, having to clear himself from a shelf containing merchandise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKim raised the gun and shot two rounds at Mason as Mason neared the door in an effort to flee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both rounds connected, and Mason died of two gunshot wounds to the back.<\/p>\n<p>The video has yet to be released.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our store clerk would&#8217;ve been just fine if he would&#8217;ve let him go and called 911,\u201d said Pierce County Sheriff\u2019s spokesman Ed Troyer. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to carry weapons you have to have the responsibility of carrying that weapon. We can\u2019t have shoplifts turn into homicides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From here the story only gets more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>According to Q13 Fox News, \u201cin February, Kim\u2019s wife, Suel, got into a shootout with an alleged robber. A bullet ripped through her side and the shooter took off running. She recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/news\/local\/man-shot-killed-at-spanaway-convenience-store\/103592303\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"store-owner-charged-with-2nd-degree-murder-after-shooting-would-be-robber\" title=\"Store Owner Charged with 2nd Degree Murder After Shooting Shoplifter\">an interview<\/a> that the sound of someone entering his store makes him nervous to this day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am scared. I&#8217;m scared of everybody who is walking actually right now. Whoever just walks by I am frightened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Troyer addressed the previous incident in a number of interviews, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a tough one because we can understand why the store clerk was on guard. His wife has just been shot there a month before during a robbery attempt and the whole family was upset about it.
