About as tough as a folding knife gets.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Intro <\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/steelwillknives.com\/\" campaign=\"SteelWill\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Steel Will Knives<\/a> is not yet a household name, that\u2019s because they\u2019ve only been around for about a year now.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But in the 12 months or so since their inception under their parent corporation, SMG Inc., they\u2019ve certainly made a splash within the knife world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">How did Steel Will differentiate themselves in a super crowded marketplace?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By making kick-ass blades that deliver on all fronts: quality, ergonomics, utility, aesthetics, and price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I managed to get my paws on a Gekko 1505 for this review.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The best way I can describe the knife would be to call it a Hummer in the trappings of a Ferrari, a ruggedly built, heavy-duty behemoth with the contours, cosmetics and class of an Italian-made sports car.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s both a beauty and a beast!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Overview<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first thing you\u2019ll notice when you pick up a Gekko 1505 is the size of the knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s big.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At almost 9 inches long when deployed, it\u2019s a big freaking folder!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No, this isn\u2019t an accident.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was purpose-built to be a big folding knife that can, as the website says, \u201cgo head-to-head with fixed blade outdoor knives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s quite a statement, and later you can read how I took it to task to test that claim, but the Gekko is categorized under Steel Will\u2019s \u201cOutdoor Series,\u201d and it\u2019s easy to see why.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The size, as I said, 9 inches fully deployed, 4-inch blade, the weight, almost 7 ounces, and the solid design make it an ideal blade to take into the great outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>[one_half]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54737\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/BigLog.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\">D2 steel<\/a>, and coated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hauzertechnocoating.com\/en\/plasma-coating-explained\/pvd-coating-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\">PVD<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; a process by which materials are vaporized under vacuum coating conditions to produce a wear resistant, friction resistant coating.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It has an ambidextrous pocket clip, making it suitable for lefties and righties, a pointed-lanyard hole that also functions as a glass breaker or pressure point tool, satin liners that are nicely rounded, terraced thumb studs, jimping on the spine for improved grip &#8212; basically, a bevy of features that underscore the attention to detail that went into making this knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While all that is impressive, what really stood out to me was the action \u2014 it\u2019s buttery smooth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s not something you\u2019d expect on a knife this big.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0But it pops open with ease and locks firmly into place with the hefty lockback. \u00a0When it&#8217;s deployed, there is absolutely no play or movement on the blade. \u00a0It is securely in place. \u00a0It is ready to rock and roll. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Specs<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Steel: D2<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Full Length: 8.98 inches<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Blade Length: 3.94 inches<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Blade Thickness: 0.14\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Folded Length: 5.04 inches<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Blade Finish: PVD<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Blade-HRC: 59-60<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Handle: Micarta<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Weight: 6.8oz<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Lock Type: Lockback<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">MSRP: $239.99<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Utility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The minute I read that this knife was designed to go head-to-head with full-tang fixed blades I accepted this as an open invitation to go medieval on this blade.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wasn\u2019t going to test it to failure \u2014 because I think that\u2019s just stupid \u2014 but I was certainly going to put it through its paces to determine if the Gekko is really an outdoor knife that can handle the tall tasks one expects from a fixed blade while camping, hiking, hunting, surviving. \u00a0<strong>Note:<\/strong> this testing is purely anecdotal. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t have the setup or measuring tools to do a systematic scientific evaluation of the knife.<\/p>\n<p>[one_half]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54747\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Baton1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? Fun!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>[\/one_half_last]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Chopping<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chopping with a folder is a big no, no for obvious reasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Putting that much stress on the locking mechanism and the pivot point of the knife is only inviting trouble.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re basically begging for a breakdown in the integrity of the knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But I did it anyways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After slicing off the bark on some relatively thick branches (about an inch and half in diameter) I began to chop them up with the knife. Again, it\u2019s not designed to chop.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When deployed, the balance of the knife favors the handle making it difficult to get the leverage one would desire for optimal chopping. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In terms of performance, though, the Gekko chopped about as well as a folding knife can. \u00a0It ate up the branches and my hand and arm got tired before the knife showed any sign of fatigue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Final Ruling: Pass<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Batoning <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Like chopping, batoning with a folder is non-optimal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It can seriously damage, probably even ruin, the knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet again, I took the Gekko to task.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I batoned it into the joints of some pallets and some branches.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I worry when I baton with a fixed blade, so doing this with a premium folder made me sweat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the Gekko didn\u2019t just hold up, it excelled.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There were zero issues with the knife after striking into the branches, and the pallet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Note, I did this in both a wet part of the wood and a dry part of the pallet you see in the picture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No issues.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No wiggle in the blade. \u00a0No breakdown in the knife. \u00a0At this point, I was becoming really impressed. \u00a0Also, the PVD coating held up quite well. \u00a0You can see how the black color faded a bit around the edge but overall it was still intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Final Ruling: Pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Whittling <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Well, I wasn\u2019t really whittling so much as spear making.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Using the edge of the blade to slice deeply into the tips of the branches I chopped up to form a nice sharp point. \u00a0After the hard use of the first two phases, the edge had dulled a little. \u00a0Whittling was, therefore, more strenuous of an activity that it would have been if I would have done this first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet again, the Gekko held up well. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t going to leave the field to sharpen the knife so I continued to test it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Final Ruling: Pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Tip Prying<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the last phase of the testing, I slammed the point of the knife into the pallet and then twisted it around.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I did this multiple times. \u00a0It was the tip prying test. \u00a0I wanted to see how the tip of the knife would hold up while being corkscrewed into the pressed hardwood of the pallet. \u00a0This is another rigorous test that puts a lot of undue pressure on a knife. \u00a0After doing this seven times, I was satisfied. \u00a0The Gekko survived and was none the worse for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Final Ruling: Pass.<\/p>\n<p>[one_half]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54744\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Chopping.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54739\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Chop2-400x277.jpg\" alt=\"A look from the other side.  \" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Chop2-400x277.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Chop2-150x104.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Chop2-1024x710.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A look from the other side. \u00a0You&#8217;ll note how the black coating has grayed a little around the edge. \u00a0Hard use will do that.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>[\/one_half_last]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Can the Gekko really go head-to-head with a fixed blade?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No. \u00a0I&#8217;m still not convinced that any folder can go head-to-head with a fixed blade for the simple reason that one piece of steel is stronger than two pieces of steel secured by a lock back or liner lock or frame lock. \u00a0But of all the folders on the market if I had to pick one to come close it would definitely be the Gekko.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is one heck of a tough knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I loved stretching the limits of what this knife was made to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On a side note, if you\u2019re in the market for a fixed blade, Steel Will makes fixed blade Gekkos! \u00a0So, if you wanted a Gekko for extra hard use you can easily pick up a fixed blade version.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Drawbacks<\/b><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_54745\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Pry2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? What\u2019s in a name? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have to be honest, when I hear the name \u201cGekko,\u201d I think of happy little lizard (Geico\u2019s gecko) attempting to sell me car insurance, I don\u2019t think of a fine-looking, contoured, Italian-made folding knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m sorry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It just doesn\u2019t fit in my opinion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s like if instead of Kate Upton being named Kate Upton, she called herself Mildred Zwaladski.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, the Gekko should have a better name.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is it really a drawback?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe for the sales and marketing guys at Steel Will, but not for the user.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>2. Bigger is Better?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The size of the Gekko will immediately turn some people off.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Traditionally speaking, it\u2019s large for an EDC knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I got used to it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t really bother me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then again, I don\u2019t wear skinny jeans.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My jeans have ample pocket room to accompany a knife the size of a Gekko.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Plus, I have large hands and have no problem with deploying the knife or using it for extended periods of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet, I know that a lot of you out there will dismiss it as an EDC knife because of its size.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Thankfully, Steel Will has anticipated this criticism\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/steelwillknives.com\/our-knives\/outdoor-series\/gekko-1552.html\" campaign=\"Steel Will\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">will be releasing a smaller version of the Gekko<\/a>, one that&#8217;s more size appropriate for EDC. \u00a0I&#8217;d love to get my hands on this EDC version. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Warranty<\/b><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_54740\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/BatonHard.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"steel-will-gekko-1505\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54740\" title=\"Steel Will Gekko 1505: A Folding Knife that Can Go Head-To-Head with a Fixed Blade? -- Review\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/BatonHard-400x281.jpg\" alt=\"Batoning into a wooden crate may wreck the knife and void the warranty. So, do so at your own peril.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Steel Will\u2019s warranty is about average in terms of the industry standard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Basically, they\u2019ll cover you if you don\u2019t abuse your knife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, for some of you out there that\u2019s not going to be acceptable as you like to beat up on your blades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here is part of what they say with respect to the warranty:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Steel Will knives are intended for use as cutting tools. Using them for their intended purpose will rarely result in failure due to defects. Most damage occurs when Steel Will knives are used for unsuitable tasks like prying, pounding, chiseling, and hammering. The warranty will become void (as determined by SMG, Inc.) if:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em>Our knives are used for any purpose other than cutting (improper use).<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em>The knife is modified in any way.<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em>There is damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening.<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em>Repairs to your knife are performed by any source other than SMG, Inc.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Like most tools, our knives need to be cared for properly. If your Steel Will knife has been put to demanding use for a long time, it is possible that the knife may need sharpening or maintenance to retain its usefulness. Any and all maintenance is the responsibility of the knife owner and is not covered by this warranty.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>What can I say other than I&#8217;m thoroughly impressed by the Gekko.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit large, and a bit heavy but it is a tough-ass knife with real style and class. \u00a0I wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to carry this knife every day or to bring it camping or hiking or hunting or on any other outdoor expedition. \u00a0It&#8217;s the best hard-use folder I&#8217;ve tested.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the market for a higher-end, premium folder then definitely check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/steelwillknives.com\/our-knives\/outdoor-series\/gekko-1505.html\" campaign=\"Steel Will 3\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Steel Will Gekko 1505<\/a>. \u00a0For around $200, you can get a large, all-purpose knife that will last you a lifetime (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knifecenter.com\/item\/SMG1505\/steel-will-1505-gekko-folding-knife-394-d2-drop-point-blade-maroon-micarta-handles\" campaign=\"KnifeCenter\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Knifecenter<\/a> is selling them for $203.99).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intro is not yet a household name, that\u2019s because they\u2019ve only been around for about a year now.\u00a0 But in the 12 months or so since their inception under their parent corporation, SMG Inc., they\u2019ve certainly made a splash within the knife world.
