Leland Yee, a total and complete scumbag.<\/p><\/div>\n

The story of Leland Yee reads to me like an infomercial where instead of adding on more features to improve the salability of the product, they keep piling on ascending notes of incredulity that only serve to make one more angry and frustrated on how broken the justice system is and how corrupt our politicians are. In short, the more you learn about Yee\u2019s story, the more maddening it gets.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start off, shall we?<\/h2>\n

Ladies and gentlemen, I\u2019d like to present you Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from California. He served District-8, that is to say, San Francisco. The city by the bay!<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yee is a staunch supporter of rolling back the rights of law-abiding gun owners. He is a gun-grabber of the highest order. In addition to backing the failed and pointless process of micro-stamping, Yee has been a longtime proponent of banning modern sporting rifles.<\/p>\n

In 2012, while backing a measure (SB 249) that would ban any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, Yee said<\/a>, \u201cIt is extremely important that individuals in the state of California do not own assault weapons. I mean that is just so crystal clear, there is no debate, no discussion.”<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yes was heralded by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence for his anti-gun agenda. In 2006, he was awarded<\/a> to the group\u2019s \u201cGun Violence Prevention Honor Roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After being the subject of a four-year investigation by the FBI, Yee was arrested in March 2014. The senator was charged with various crimes for attempting to extort campaign contributions from an NFL team owner, taking bribes to vote on certain pieces of legislation, i.e. selling his vote to the highest bidder, assisting shell companies in their quest for state grants and contracts \u2014 and most, importantly, offering to smuggle automatic weapons and shoulder-fired rockets into the country via Philippines-based terrorist cells in exchange for campaign donations.<\/p>\n

Just to repeat, Yee does not want law-abiding Americans to have semi-automatic modern sporting rifles. Nope. That shouldn\u2019t even be discussed or debated. But Yee is more than happy to furnish terrorist groups with fully-automatic assault rifles!<\/p>\n

Yee, who is 67, faced up to 20 years in prison \u2014 essentially, the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Despite all the evidence compiled by the FBI, Yee only pled guilty to one count of federal racketeering in July 2015 for accepting bribes. Federal prosecutors then recommended an 8-year sentence for Yee.<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Lee\u2019s defense attorney argued that Yee\u2019s gun smuggling deal involved only 100 rifles and $44,000 in bribes \u2014 not the $100,000 figure and 200 guns that the government purported. In other words, he should be granted some leniency with respect to sentencing because he only tried to place 100 guns in the hands of terrorists \u2014 not 200.<\/p>\n

The attorney also had the audacity to say that Yee \u201cshouldn’t be over-punished because he’s a public official.”<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The judge seemed to be aware of the gravity of the crime, especially in light of Yee\u2019s public image as a bastion for tougher gun laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hypocritical position on your part to be for gun control and that automatic weapons would be brought into the United States is frightening and unfathomable. I cannot tell you how disturbing it is,” said U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer on Wednesday, according to CourtHouseNews<\/a>. “You were willing to go entirely contrary to your stated position for money, and that is the most venal and dangerous thing you’ve done.”<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Despite Judge Breyer\u2019s assessment, the hammer was not dropped on Yee. Instead, Yee was treated with kid gloves.<\/p>\n

Breyer, a Clinton appointee, sentenced Yee to 60 months in prison. Five measly years! Five measly years!<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yee, now a convicted felon, is being sent to federal prison. But it\u2019s not your typical hardened, federal penitentiary.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a white-collar \u201ccorrectional institution\u201d in Taft, California, operated by a private corporation. It\u2019s a \u201cClub Fed,\u201d not a Fed Pen. It made CNBC\u2019s list of \u201cThe Best Places to Go to Prison.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

But wait, there’s more…<\/h2>\n

So-called experts want us to believe that justice was served. \u00a0That Yee got a sentence worthy of his crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe public should be assured officials who violate the public\u2019s trust will be held accountable, and those of us who are tasked with holding officials to the highest ethical standards will be vigilant in doing so,\u201d Jodi Remke, chairwoman of the state Fair Political Practices Commission, told the LA Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This narrative that the government is doing its job to police its own is complete B.S. \u00a0For every one\u00a0Leland Yee that gets caught, how many currently roam free in Washington and in state capitals around the country?<\/p>\n

Our lesson?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Leland Yee is a scumbag who betrayed the people he claimed to serve. He deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars, serving hard time. He shouldn\u2019t be remanded to some minimally-secured day spa where he can pal around with other white-collar criminals and joke about how he almost got away with everything he planned. It\u2019s ridiculous.<\/p>\n

But his sentencing and his treatment are a sign of all that\u2019s wrong with our justice system, which caters to those with power, influence, money and crashes down on the poor and working class. Think about this, the U.S. makes up only five percent of the world\u2019s population, yet has 25 percent of the world\u2019s prison population. That raises a lot of questions. Why are the powers that be so quick to jail regular and working-class folks and reluctant to imprison the real perpetrators of chaos and disorder (corrupted politicians, feckless bankers, inept bureaucrats, corporate elites)?<\/p>\n

After all, they are the ones bankrupting this country, attacking our civil liberties, destroying our environment, etc., why aren\u2019t they being held accountable for the damage the sow? Why is it that someone like Leland Yee only gets a slap on the wrist for what should be a lifelong sentence? Why do we tolerate a justice system that is so alarmingly biased?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
